When does a new coach stick with the old QB

hurney staying will probably have more of an impact on what happens at QB than anything. a criterion he will likely use in making the new HC decision is probably if they can go with who they have in house....specifically clausen.

i doubt that hurney will want to do much more house cleaning than he already has done.

If you were Hurney would you pin the future of the franchise on a second year QB when you went coach-hunting?

And if you were a head coach would you accept those terms?

Ok, if Singletary is eliminated then that means 0 coaches during the last 3 years of coaching moves have kept the old QB as there starter based on the OPs criteria (Not counting in house hires and 1 yr window to make a move)

I know if it was me as a new coach I would tell Hurney we need a veteran or two especially for depth. Wouldn't make any concessions to playing Clausen regardless and I doubt Hurney would be stupid enough to stipulate it. He knows enough about football to know that just because a rookie looks good on draft day doesn't mean they will pan out a year or two later. As I said earlier, he would have to get a lot better over the next 11 games before I would want to stake my future on him or anyone else.

it depends on how confident you were with your choices. i suspect hurney is pretty confident in his.

re: me accepting those terms that i have to go with an in house option...it would depend on if i thought i could work with the QB or not. if i thought i could, it wouldn't really matter. i might tell the GM that i'll give him a year to see how it works.

a lot of it also depends on if i have my eye on another QB from another team (like haley and mckid did both wanting cassel) or one in the draft.

e.g., harbaugh might want to bring in luck (which i would be fine with).

personally, i just want the best QB to have the job. i see a lot in clausen but i'm not sold on the idea that much of any players HAVE to stay on the team. who ever makes the panthers stronger and more competitive is who i want on the team and i always want upgrades at every position.

yeah, i probably would counter the stipulation that i have to go with clausen with i need to get a solid vet QB backup in.

washington, detroit,st. louis, atlanta & kansas city cleaned out the entire front office & replaced their head coaches so they didn't have loyalty to a QB drafted by the previous adminstration. cleveland, & baltimore haven't had stable qb play for most of this decade. new york played musical chairs with favre.(after they tossed out pennington) denver's franchise qb wanted out. the only YOUNG qb off of any of these teams i would be willing to hitch my wagon to is cutler. all the others are high draft busts, fellons, or developmental qb's that had flashes here & there. either way they all had mulitiple seasons of poor play to make a sound judgement on them.

Fixed. :)

I think since Clausen is not the franchise QB....yet. The new Coach will probably try to ride with him. But might bring in a FA just to be safe.

Pretty much my take.

Not unusual for a coaching ego to say something like "wait till they see what he can do with me coaching him."
