When does a new coach stick with the old QB

I talked about this in another thread looking at the last 3 seasons.

2010

Shanahan - got his own QB

2009

Schwartz - got his own QB

Spag - got his own QB the following year

Ryan - got his own QB

McDanials - got his own QB

Haley - got his own QB

Mangini - kept QBs for 1 season and got rid of them all, got his own QB

2008

Smith - got his own QB

Harbaugh - got his own QB

- still in the 1 year window is

2010

Gailey - already got rid of 1 - if he stays another year he will bring in his own QB.

So, Mike Singletary in SF is the only coach I can think of that didn't bring in his own QB within his first 2 seasons out of the past 3 seasons of coaching changes I can think of. That was off the top of my head so I could be missing some coaches. Indy promoted from within.

How many stipulations does that question have? You're trying to narrow a question down until it is so narrow, people can't help but to agree.

When was the last time a team was truly in re-build mode? I wouldn't even classify us in a re-build mode, we're in a "save money now so we won't get f**k if there's a lock-out next year" mode.

New head coach comes into a rebuilding situation from outside the organization. Not a lot stipulated there, it's a very common occurrence in the NFL.

And I guess you can disagree about whether or not we're rebuilding or not, but the last time I looked we cut all our veteran leadership, didn't sign any free agents, and just started four rookies against the Bears - three on offense. It may not be rebuilding, but it sure looks like it.

Mike McCarthy in his first season as coach 2007 kept Brett Favre after the Packers went 4-12 the season prior

going back to 07 there are some examples. All of those coaches inherited former Superbowl Champs at QB I think. Tomlin and McCarthy.

Neither the Chargers nor the Dolphins were rebuilding. That's a key part of the question.

The 2001 Chargers were 5-11. As far as the Dolphins, Johnson felt like they were starting from scratch.

When he came in he told the team nobody was safe, that not a single player was a lock for the final roster, except Marino whom he said "You're safe. You're number one." A little while later he saw Larry Izzo make a phenomenal special teams play and told him "You just made the squad. You're umber two."

Bottom line: I'll go back to what I said previously. It all depends on what happens in the next 11 games.

Doesn't any team in rebuild mode usually replace a QB, new coach or not?

Depends on whether he's part of the problem.

There extenuating circumstances to almost all of those situations that I don't feel like typing on my phone. Needless to say, none of those guys had a qb with the potential that Jimmy has.

Perry Fewell in '09 kept Edwards

And I'm trying to remember if there is more.

The 2001 Chargers' leading passer was Doug Flutie. Brees was a rookie who saw action in one game that year. Schottenheimer did make the change to Brees, which is a pretty good catch. And obviously, he didn't stay with the old QB. :)

usually when a coach gets fired it's because he's not winning games. You need a good QB to win games. You don't find many coaches who get fired despite having a top end qb. It's kind of a chicken-egg argument. Did the QB suck because of the coach or did the coach suck because of the QB?

you could probably correlate a number of positional replacements to coaching turnovers.

I wouldn't really consider the Steelers to have been in a rebuilding phase though...

At this point, I'm confused as to what "rebuilding mode" means. For teams like the Bills, the Browns, and the Lions, who have generally sucked for the past decade, are they always in rebuild mode? Or, are they a group to themselves?

Then, there's teams like the Jets this year who added a heap of free agents. Does that mean they rebuilt from the previous year?

Fewell was promoted from within the organization mid-season. The system stayed the same, as did all the personnel in it. This year they got their new coach, and he changed QBs.
