This is exactly how I saw it as well. When they wouldn't let him go and then tried to negotiate a salary he had had enough. If you are going to make him stay where he doesn't want to be and then try and negotiate a "lower" salary than he could get elsewhere you lose. I am on Peppers side on this letter writing drama.
