Why don't we use our tight ends?

The Question

Recommended Posts

If I remember correctly when Davidson was first brought in there was a lot of talk that he wanted to utilize the tight ends more in the passing game. The combined numbers of King, Barnidge, and Rosario last year were respectable. But I would like to see them used more especially with the current receiver situation. Could make for a interesting 3 TE set down at the goal line if the offense ever gets to the goal line.

I think we have a pretty good group of tightends. And they were utilized last year quite a bit, at least relative to how little we threw the ball. Nearly 25% of our completions went to the tightends last year, thats right around the league average.

We don't have a QB who can throw it to a tightend.

Clausen has maybe three completions to the tightend in the last two games, and one of those bounced off Jarrett.

one still existing case of seniority over talent.

there is no way he should be the starter.

can't wait for fox to be gone.

he's the best blocker, both pass and run.

Rosario, prior to this week, was the team's best 3rd down option, so he's being used. Excepting this week.

There aren't enough balls for everybody. Barnidge should earn a few first.

But, overall, when we can't get slant plays right, spreading the ball to 3 TEs isn't the critical thing either.

That and Clausen has been playing it so safe he only throws it to recievers with no one around them...usually the check down back

I have no answers why we don't use our TEs more. But I say that with Claussen as our QB. Moore DID target them quite a bit. Short throws to them might result in the defense not being able to blitz as much, thus, more time is bought to open thigs up downfield for the WRs. That's the theory anyways. Before Fox was here, we had great success getting the ball to Wesley Walls. Just about every NFL team that has been or is run oriented utilizes their TEs in the passing game, but we don't. Go figure..

Yeah, tightends tend to be a QB's security blanket, and at this time I feel like utilizing one more would help Jimmy gain some confidence..

Then again... why dont we screen much to our backs?

one of those questions that will go unanswered... Im glad we have football "experts" handling the business on the offensive side of the football!

I think theres a variety of reasons, including the QB play and playcalling, but that doesnt change the fact theyre all mediocre to blah, no. 2 guys at best. Good thing Rosario and King are FAs at the end of the year, which may force the team to address the position, seeing as thats the only circumstance in which theyd make any changes, anyway. Marcedes Lewis is also a FA and wants out of Jacksonville.

Quick answer is:

You can't throw the ball to evryone. You have to figure that you have at least 2 WR's on every play and one TE.

If you are running on 1/2 your plays. If I'm not mistaken, league average is 60 plays per game. Carolina is a Run Heavy offense. That means you are going to run the ball AT LEAST 30++ times a game. (Lately it has been less due to playing catch up.) Smitty feels like he should get 20 catches a game. (All WR's feel they should see the ball more!) Relistically he should see 10+. (Lately, he hasn't even seen that!) Your #2 guy (whoever that is/going to be) should see between 5-7 passes. What's left is 13-15 passes to 2+ WR's and 2 TE's & 2 RB's (Dont' forget about them.) That leaves about 2 passes per game for everyone else. That's about what Rosario & King see.

The problem is Moore and Clausen do a terrible job of looking off the receiver. It's like they have tunnel vision. When a QB only looks for 1 guy to pass to at a time, your interception ratio goes up. (Guess what. Panthers have a very high INT ratio!)

If you look at the COLTS and Peyton Manning. First, what does he do? Play Action! That helps freeze the Defense coming in. In that split second, He's looking for a receiver down field. Who's on Reggie? If he gets a lineman or single coverage, guess where he's going with the ball?

Next, he mentally checks his other 2 WR's. Not finding them open, he has his "Dump Off" men. Dallas Clark, (Who I say is the BEST TE in football today!) and/or his RB. (Clark was a Walk On LB at Iowa before being converted to TE!)

This all changes when the COLTS get to the Red Zone. Peyton LOVES to find Dallas Clark just hanging out at the Goal Line!

Check how many times Peyton uses the Play Action in these films!

Now, Look at these Jimmy CLausen Highlight clips. MAYBE 1 Play Action, but looks how his eyes just zeros in one one receiver! What is that telling the Defense? Where do you think the pass is going if he doesn't look at the other WR's?
