who thinks that Alex Smith can still be a good QB. I know, I know, "he sucks!", every game I have seen him play he shows great moxie and a tremendous throwing arm, and also great athletic ability. I can see why he was drafted so high.

It seems he has wore out his welcome in San Fran, and they have lost all patience with him. I think San Fran's fans yelling for "We want Carr" are completly retarded, its like a drunk buddy going off with a fat, ugly chick. Part of you wants to see him go and beast that fat ass and make fun of him, but then you feel bad because he is so retarded, and he wouldn't do it if he was sober.

I would love him to be a veteran backup, either this season or next. I honestly believe that, much like the Panthers, the 49er's offensive scheme limits his potential.

Now, I believe that Jimmy is the future, but we are going to need a back-up to push for the job, and with experience. Also, Matt Moore will likely be gone. He could be had for pennies on the dollar, and he is going to want to go somewhere with an oppertunity. Also, with a new coach, he is going to have an open-mind about who should be starting.

It's the bye week and this is something I have been thinking about. If you dont like this thread then......

Yeah, I don't know about Smith. He's hot and cold. I just wish the Panthers wasn't so weak on so many positions on offense.

I think a lot of Smith's problems lie in two things:

1) He's had tons of different offensive schemes that he's had to learn and re-learn since he entered the NFL.

2) Mike Singletary sucks as a head coach. He's caused a divide amongst the group, and he's a piece of trash.

everyone in the media seems to like Singletary but his track record is not every good....singletary does seem like he would be one hell of a DC

Alex Smith is a GREAT quarterback 95% of the time. Unforutnately he makes major mistakes during that 5% that overshadows how good he really is. If you watch him throw and run the offense during regular drives he is very very good. Much better than what we have with our rookies at this point.

If the offense doesn't improve the 49rs will win big.

alex smith is better than david carr and thats about all i'm willing to give him. he is, at his very best, a slightly below average QB. he will never be more than that.

you want to bring someone else in? try having a little higher standards. find an older QB who has seen success and has talent.

its the same in every NFL town... when the starting QB struggles the backup is the most popular guy in town, regardless of his past track record.

Smith definitely grew a pair Sunday Night...and he needed to. When he confronted Singletary he took that step in his career.

Smith encountered what almost all high first round QB picks run into: a lousy team. In his short career he's had two different head coaches, who knows how many OCs and constant QB controversies. He came out of college in three years (with his degree) and got thrown into a true no-win situation.

Top it off with having to deal with Mike Singletary's first HCing job and sheesh, the guy hasn't had an easy go of it. And let's face it, Singletary isn't to coaching what he was to linebacking.

He probably is damaged goods at this point, but not unfixable. If he's lucky, he'll get traded at the end of the season to someone who is willing to do the repair work.

The cautionary tale here, of course, is one that Jimmy Claussen should be paying attention to.

I'm actually a fan of Smith and think he could one day be a good/great QB. He just needs to stop being so inconsistent. FWIW I'm also a Palmer fan and think he will soon return to the pre knee injury form but I get hated on all the time for it.
