Thomas catches on quickly in Carolina

The Carolina Panthers claimed former Redskins wide receiver Devin Thomas off waivers on Monday, two days after Washington's top pick in the 2008 draft was released. The 34th overall selection in 2008, the demonstrative Thomas did not mesh well with Coach Mike Shanahan, who questioned Thomas's professionalism.

"It's official. I'm a carolina panther!," Thomas wrote on his Twitter account.

In a little more than two seasons with the Redskins, Thomas had 40 catches for 445 yards (an 11.1-yard average) and two touchdowns. The former Michigan State standout established career highs with seven receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints last season at FedEx Field.

In a telephone interview shortly after he was released Saturday, Thomas, 23, said he was determined to have a productive NFL career.

"Coach Shanahan called me in and told me it was a numbers game, so they had to do this, but you could see this coming," said Thomas, who had no receptions this season. "But I'll be ready wherever I go next. I'm just going to work even harder. I know I can play this game."

By taking Thomas off waivers, the Panthers assume the remainder of his contract.

Thomas and Shanahan were a bad fit from the start. At times during practice, Shanahan admonished Thomas for thumping his chest after a big play or boasting to defensive backs he beat, said multiple people who watched them interact during practice throughout the offseason and preseason.

Shanahan made it clear to Thomas he is not a big fan of individual celebrations, but Thomas has been flashy since he played youth football. He had a "showtime" mentality when he was a standout at Michigan State.

Thomas also began modeling and acting careers on the side. Although Thomas insisted football would remain his focus, and he worked hard in the offseason and reported to training camp in outstanding shape, modeling and acting careers probably did not help him with Shanahan, the sources said.

Don't mind a little swag if you're bringing it on a consistent basis, but as for modeling and acting, I would hope that Thomas focuses on football now that he is a Panther.

Well, he was a fairly high draft pick and apparently has some skills. Plus he came to camp in shape, and appears eager to contribute. I guess we'll have to wait and see how he pans out in this piecemeal receiving corps.

One of these guys has to work out, right? All this potential can't come to nothing....I hope. Thing is is that we may not find out if our O-line can't block an immovable object, much less rushing opposition.

He's definitely got talent. He's better physically equipped for the game than Jarret was. This guy is big and fast. Probably isn't as stupid either but we will soon find out. Hopefully the change of scenery does him well.

Yeah and it will still be Clausen or Moore throwing the ball, so until the Oline gives the QB a little more protection and time, we could have gotten Moss and I really don't think it would matter. Even if Otah is back, he won't be in football shape.

He is only 23 and will most likely continue to mature particularly over the course of the next couple years. Very young and has talent. I can see why we went after him.
