I understand the need for it, and honestly i wish we could trade away our 2 3rds for a second pick in the 1st to grab a top 15 DT (which is the best there is this year... just top 15 DT's, not top 5) but we have a chance at taking the second coming of randy moss and calvin johnson, and he hails from panther country.... we have the 32nd ranked offense in the league, i dont care what you say about just drafting 3rd round talents at WR, get A.J. Green in here let him learn under Steve the next two seasons, and hopefully Gettis develops into a #2 while Edwards perfects the slot and if Clausen isn't cutting it 3 seasons THEN we make a move for a franchise QB in the 2014 draft with 3 great speedy WR's and a 2nd year franchise Left Offensive Tackle.

Why pick a top 5 WR when we have a project QB. If we are going to draft someone in the top 5 especially with a rookie cap I would take another QB or DT/DE/corner. Clausen is cheap and not a high pick. Lets take another one and see if we can hit the jackpot with one of them. Truth is a great franchise quarterback make average receivers good. A great receiver like Smitty still can't do anything if the quarterback can't get them the ball.

Otherwise I go defense.

as I've said a few times, I think that unless Clausen really shows us something, if we get a top 5 pick and a QB is there that the new coach really likes, we're going with a QB.

edt: this does not mean Clausen is getting cut or anything. He may even start. Just saying, I think we'd bring in a young QB if the coach thinks that QB is more likely to be "his man."

So, you don't see LaFell in your vision of the future of our offense?

No doubt we need to lock up who we have on defense, they'll be fine, probably just shore up the thin (depth or ability) positions with some FAs in the offseason whenever JR decides to clean out his couch.

The defense will be fine with that strategy. As has been said, if we have a Top 3 pick, and if we suck this season, I have no problem going with 1 or 2 wins to get the #1, may as well suck all the way lol...

With that pick you'd have to go with Luck or A.J. Green right now. I'd love to take Green and it's hard to pass him up with all his ability, but as P55 said, a great QB aka franchise, will make the whole team better. That's why I've been making the Clausen vs Bradford comparison, their team was in shambles last year b/c of QB and that team looked horrible. Now look at them. He's made practice squad receivers look like serious contributors... That whole team is better, now we'll just ignore that beating they took Sunday, but you get the idea. Clausen hasn't done that. He may later, but he's not now.

If you believe Luck is that franchise guy, which he looks the part, you gotta go with Luck, and in my dream scenario, Harbaugh will follow him here.

Depends on what the new coach believes is a priority.

Yup...

I can see us hiring a DC who promises to field an attacking defense, and having the board explode in celebration. Then we'll draft a DT high, and half the people who were just getting done declaring his genius will post about how incompetent he is before the team ever takes the field. :)

It's likely that JR will pick a HC with a defensive background imo. A current or former Steelers coach would be my guess. What makes me sick is that I don't see a way for our team to become competitive for a long time. I don't think JR is going to spend a lot of money in FA to put this team back together. We'll have to build through the draft. Things seem hopeless. For a long time I thought we just needed to get rid of Jake and bring in a good vet QB. No dice. Did we make an offer to Favre? Vick? If only Vinny had been a few years younger. Where was I? Oh yeah, get bent JR, you money grubbing, heart snatching, pumpkin headed... scruffy looking nerfhearder!

The two biggest draft bust postion picks in the first round of the draft are QB's and Wr's. I like the safe pick of DT and sign a veteran WR.

They can also be two of the biggest reward positions, at least we all know QB can be if you get the right one. If you don't have a guy that can carry your franchise, your offense will be middle of the pack at best. Jake was a high-end game manager in his prime, the high-end meaning while most games he was just efficient and didn't make mistakes, some games he could come in there and take it over and pull out a win with his ability, but that wasn't frequent.

If you have that QB that can carry you, and you consistently know what you're getting from him every game, then you can plug in scrubs around him and your offense is beast - Anyone remember Alvin Harper? lol...

I know there's a lot of risk, but Luck seems to be the real deal. So does Green. There don't seem to be a many, if any, questions about them as there usually is with guys at those positions with 1st round potential.

We've spent enough years neglecting those positions b/c we don't want to "bust" on our 1st round pick, it's time to go a different route. The defense is fine, and picking up a vet WR in FA... Wrong offseason, if we were going to do it, we should've done it this offseason... Moss may be a FA this coming offseason, then again he might not, and other than him and maybe VJax, I don't think the crop is that great, but I haven't looked so correct me if I'm wrong.
