New coaches always want to bring in "their guy" regardless of where the current QB was drafted and how much the organization has invested in him. Hell, Josh McDaniels even ran an established young Pro Bowler in Jay Cutler out of town so he could bring in his own guys and trade away half of last years draft for The Golden Calf of Bristol. Use this to your advantage.

Your new/interim HC goes on record as saying they will look at upgrading every position. When asked specifically about QB, be EXTREMELY non-committal about sticking with Clausen. Don't call him out and say he sucks, just give the typical PC answer, "well QB is the most important position on the field and we'll look at improving every aspect of the team blah blah...".

Then start scouting all the top QB prospects heavily. Go to their pro days, interview them, keep an extra eye on them during the combine and Senior Bowl. Eventually, bring in a few of the best QB prospects for private workouts.

Hopefully one QB has risen to head and shoulders above the rest and is the unanimous #1 top prospect (Andrew Luck maybe?). After weeks and weeks of heavy scouting, to where it's becoming more and more obvious to the public you will draft a new QB, go ahead and bring in this top prospect for contract negotiations.

Meanwhile, the Bills sitting at #2 or #3 overall were hoping to land their top prospect franchise QB are now in panic mode. Amidst this panic, they'll inquire about trading up and we'll go on record as saying we have no plans to give up the best QB in the draft. The opportunity to land a QB of this magnitude doesn't come along very often and there's no way we pass it up unless we're offered numerous 1st round picks.

Few days later leak to the media we are close to finishing contract negations and should have our new QB and #1 overall pick signed within the next few days. Bills should be back on the phone and at this point, we reluctantly negotiate down to taking the Bills #2 or #3 overall pick and a 2nd rounder (in either 2011 or 2012 works).

Then go ahead and take Patrick Peterson or AJ Green like you were going to do anyway and enjoy you're newly found 2nd round pick.

Regarding the original post, sounds like a plan, but might be to sneaky for us to pull off.

The good news is that we didn't invest that much in Clausen, so it wouldn't be the kind of setback it is when you use a high first round pick on a QB.

Personally, I'd like to see us trade back and get more picks to rebuild our defensive line. I'd like to see us stick with Clausen and bring in a veteran QB and veteran WR's to help him out... it's much easier to address the DL in the draft than it is QB or WR, the percentages of success are much higher when drafting a DL.

Remember guys, this is the Bills we're talking about. The same team that just traded Lynch for a 4th and 6th without fully shopping him and calling around the NFL. Since teams have come out and basically said, hey they never called us to tell say he was on the trading block, we would have given them even more.

This would be ideal I keep saying a core of AJ Green, Smitty and Gettis would be crazy. Not to mention would give Clausen some wideouts that are able to get open and can actually catch the ball.

This was less about who we should actually take 2nd/3rd overall and more about just screwing the Bills out of their 2nd round pick.

If you pull it off, there's no reason then you can't do the same thing with the next QB on the list (Jake Locker?) and trade down again a few spots to the next QB hungry team.

Patriots pull this kinda crap all the time. They made Denver trade up just one spot with them last draft because they had them convinced they would take Bay Bay.
