Positional Breakdown: Offense

A good OC would make this unit look far, far more effective than it has been. There were plays yesterday where the Bears literally had ten players on the line and we ran it anyway. No screens, no quick outs, nothing to take advantage of what the defense is clearly giving you.

What's wrong with throwing a few short passes just to loosen the defense up?

it's funny you say that, Cyberjag. There was a time in the preseason where Clausen would audible into short passing plays in situations like that. Where is that today? He has he stopped reading defenses? Was he told not to?

It's frustrating. I sit here watching the game and I can predict where they're running half the time. It's no wonder D-Will's cutbacks can be so effective; when everyone knows where you're going and are already there, you run away from that spot.

It doesn't help that when our young QB actually makes a throw, some of our other young WRs cant catch it, or that when our young WRs run routes and get open, our young QB can't make the throw. Davidson can't make them throw accurately or catch, but he can at least put them in more situations like that.

Just half? :)

Clausen isn't known for his arm strength, he's very accurate on short and intermediate routes though. So why are we heaving the ball down the field? And why does it seem so obvious to everyone here yet not to the Offensive Coordinator? Is he just bad at his job or is there something else at work that we're all missing?

Precisely. Even a rookie QB gets a clear read on that play. I don't see any way around the likelihood that Clausen was told to run it, no matter what.

Seems to me that a call like that gets made either right before the huddle breaks, or even during the snap count, and that it's a head coach overriding the OC. Were it not some sort of last second override, then there would be time for discussion and an OPTION provided by the OC.

Those assumptions leave me to believe that Fox is somehow contradicting Davidson's plays, and that the Panther's fall back (do no harm) play is always a run. With respect to that method, the Panthers were technically in that game until the last 5 minutes, until the final Bears score.

In the last drive with Moore, you could tell he was expecting, yet not getting any calls from the sidelines. They set him free to see what he could do during garbage time.

The beauty of that approach is that the QB's urge to win the down will not be obstructed by the coaches' urge to win the game. If we aren't going to have a healthy Otah, then a strong case could be made that the first down calls should happen on the field.

If we take risks, we will score more points, and turn the ball over more. But since the season is lost, we need to focus on how to score. Someone has been steering that ship unsuccessfully for 5 games, and I'm not sure who it is. On paper the job is Davidson's, but is it really what it is?
