Why is Marty Hurney's job (apparently) safe?

Why--because he's a good salary cap manager?

He's traded away picks for guys who don't contribute. Our drafts are mediocre. We don't play in free agency. And yet all you hear is "Hurney's safe." Why? The guy's a sportswriter who managed to become a front office guru?

Because he's a decent GM?

Since '03, you know how many teams have been to the NFC Championship Game more than once?

I'll save you the Google.

3.

Philly, New Orleans, and Carolina.

Who was the GM?

Typical Homer Card.

"Derp lets overlook Hurney's other terrible moves, just because we got out of the first round in the playoffs nearly 6 years ago Herp"

Hurney's an average GM who's just been getting over, kinda like the entire Panthers Staff.

Pretty simple. Look at the past 7 years and tell me why the team failed to make the playoffs.

2003 - Superbowl

2004 - injuries

2005 - Conference finals

2006 - Reloaded with Keyshawn and Kemo. Injuries didnt help

2007 - Jake injured and a constant rotation at QB. Team was good but QB play subpar

2008- balanced the WR and added stewart and Otah went 10-6 before Jakes meltdown

2009- implosion of Jake rest of the team was good.

2010- handicapped with pending lockout. Couldnt add veterans needed to field good team.

Every year Hurney signed some key people to round out the team. Alot of worked out better than others but he has field the glaring needs spot every year except this year. Which he was handcuffed to do so. That is why he is safe.

Because he keeps the team stocked with talent?

He made a mistake this season by not bringing in at least another veteran WR, but he's human.

I think he does a very good job. We may be 0-5, but this is a talented team. A good coach soon turns this ship around.

Thanks, Squirrel :)

(I don't have the patience to respond to trolls like rico6.)

Also, add to that some of the trades he has pulled, he does indeed look like a pretty good GM.

See drafts 2010, and 2009. See signing Jake Delhomme to that HORRENDOUS contract, after the worst QB performance in NFL Playoff history (dude literally hit the jackpot for playing like absolute poo) See trading a starter in Chris Harris for a career back-up.

The list gos on.

For every (1) Good Thing Hurney's done, he's added 2 horrible moves to it.

He's an average GM.

Cos we've sure missed Chris Harris....

as much as I don't want to admit this, we need some sense of continuity on this team when we purge the coaching staff. the GM is looking like the best bet for that continuity, and it makes sense. having someone here that knows the team and doesn't need an adjusting period is essential for our rebuilding and eventual rebound. he might not do the job we want him to do, but he's our best bet going forward (once richardson lets the handcuffs off of hurney)
