If first round QBs are "destined busts" as people like to refer them to...

It's just a Myth, the issue with it is they can be COSTLY busts, and a huge waste of time.

If your coaches know what they are doing *knock on wood* those chances become even less that they will be a bust.

2010 would be a great year for us to start though.

FWIW most QB "busts" are thrown in to save struggling teams that aren't that successful to begin with.

Guys like Eli, Roethlisberger, Flacco, Matt Ryan, these guys achieved early success and developed nicely, because they were put on talented teams. Teams that have a running game. Teams that have decent or better defenses. For guys like Alex Smith, SF was terrible when they drafted him. He never got a chance to make a difference because he had nothing to help him out.

I know one thing is for sure, Matt Ryan is going to be an insufferable pain in the ass playing against him in the future, and if Flacco can reach the AFC Championship game off of two road playoff wins in a row, in his rookie season, the sky's the limit for him.

I think Mark Sanchez is the best QB in the draft this year, with Stafford at #2. The problem is if we don't move up we won't get them obviously. I don't know if I'd waste a late 2nd on a QB that won't be guaranteed better than Jake.

I say we let Jake finish out his contract and see what happens from there.

Yup, and Yup.

If this team is as good as everyone says it is, none of our fans should have any problems with drafting a QB.......

for what we ask a QB to do for this team i can see why we dont get one in the first round..we run so much that are QB are not asked to throw that much a game...but to not draft QB at all is crazy

on a side note i hope we draft josh freeman

Jake Delhomme looked a lot better than he actually was this year because teams were worried about him less than DeAngelo and Jonathan (you notice when the run was stopped, Jake was a non-factor EVERY TIME this season). A strong running game is an awesome complement for a rookie QB. Reliable WRs who can get open and a possession TE are pretty good to have too.

For the record the only QB mentioned in this thread we had a shot at was Flacco.

top QB prospects historically on the board for the Panthers.

2005: Jason Campbell (80.4 career passer rating)

Aaron Rodgers (91.8 career passer rating)

2007:

Brady Quinn

2008:

Joe Flacco

We've definitely had some chances. But Fox wouldn't have contemplated it at all. Hell he wouldn't have drafted Flacco if he found him in the third round.

why the fug am i watching 2 first round QB picks in the AFC championship game?

and, by extension...

why the fug has a team with a first round QB won the superbowl the past 3 years?

Just another aspect of the game Fox likes to look at with a closed mind and what player was most responsible for our meltdown in AZ?

you can't win the big one with a closed mind.

Could have had Flacco instead of Stewart, I don't think most Panther fans would have thought that was a good call either however.

Why would you want a QB with 1 year of college play?

I would rather take a braford or The Golden Calf of Bristol who have had more time to prepare.

2010 draft is going to be the oppertunity we have wanted to get our next QB

Let's take a look at an fuller list of QB's we "missed" in the first or second round in Fox's tenure:

02 - Harrington and Ramsey passed over for Peppers

03 - Boller and Grossman passed over for Gross

04 - No real prospects here. Losman was the closest at 22. We got Gamble instead

05 - Rodgers and Campbell passed over for Davis.

06 - Clemens and T Jackson passed over for Williams

07 - Quinn and Kolb passed up for Beason (and Kalil)

08 - Flacco and Brohm (2nd) passed up for Stewart and Otah

Of these 13 QB's only 3 started fulltime this year.

So Fox and Hurney gets 9 key starters instead of taking a 76% chance we get a guy who doesn't even start.

Man what a bunch of idiots.

Sanchez scares the crap outa me too, talent hell yes, experiance hell no. if we expect him to come in here and take us to the playoffs year 1, or heck start year 1, i am not to hopefull. the bust rate on throwing a qb to the fire with little experiance is not too good. freeman and stafford have 3 years experiance each, and would be alot more hopeful that they could cope like flacco or ryan.

personally i am thinking its getting very close to matt moore's time, or its time to look somewhere else quick. we need a definate qb by 2010 alteast. if its not moore, we need to get a guy on the roster quick to learn for a year and take over (mccown?).
