This is not a rebuilding year

Happy Panther

Don't you guys know?

Were can't be a good team until we get out, sign some all stars, have espn rub us off daily, and THEN we'll be ready to contend.

Everyone knows you can't win without all stars.

Or at least that's what "fans" like this would like you to believe.

What does all that even mean?

Did you mean to post in this thread?

Nothing really to do with a lockout and I'm not suggesting trading our young core players, but some of the aging vets that are a year or two away from being done in the NFL still have trade value.

Panthers seem to always hang onto these types of guys, squeezing out every last possible snap from them until they have zero trade value and we just have to release them. That's not exactly a good way to expedite the rebuilding process.

I don't really understand who these guys are, that we're trying to squeeze every snap out of. There's Kasay, but honestly, what team has a good, young kicker. Loads of kickers are 33+ years old, so that's kinda the norm. Same thing goes for Baker.

There only other two people I say would be Gross and Smitty. While I think they are still able to perform, their careers are headed towards the end. And I've gone on record and said that I would trade Smitty (if the price was right). Gross? I'm not sure I would trade. I think Gross is the anchor of our offensive line, and really makes it all click. (He's not on his game right now, thus the offensive line is not on their game.)

But who else is there? Gamble is only 27. He's still young, fresh, and has a lot of talent in him. Everyone else is even younger.

Right. nobody says you clean out pro-bowlers.

If you decide to rebuild you get rid of the old and expensive.

Assuming the lockout is a real possibility you have to look at Salaries and age in 2012.

Gamble is the highest paid player by far and our secondary is questionable. you easily get rid of him.

Smitty is a ? He will be 33 and his salary isn't that bad. Maybe you keep him on if he is still playing well. But he isn't a leader

We will see with Gross. A bad year and we could cast him off.

Gamble + gross = 25M/yr. You can get some damn good players for 25M

My question is, who exactly are you guys referring to? Smitty? DWill? Gross? Kasay? Baker?

I'm to lazy to see what people are slated to make in 2012. Whoever is old and/or making serious bank is worth considering especially if you can get draft picks.

otherwise you aren't rebuilding

Fans always want to convince themselves that they're only one or two pieces away from being contenders but I don't agree that's the situation the Panthers are in now.

We've got some serious holes on the team. DTs are probably the worst in the league. Same for the WR corps. Our DEs have two sacks through 4 games. Gross is on the downslope of his career and getting a new franchise LT isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world. Gaping hole at RG and an often-injured RT. Marshall may be leaving after this season. Even some of the positions that look solid the depth behind the starters is terrible.

Adding a couple free agents this offseason wouldn't have fixed this mess.

kasay would be top of the list (and rhys lloyd). find someone that can do both jobs and that can kick FGs from 50+ yards out.

williams i could see getting traded for a decent value (much better than smith). as much as i like williams, he could be replaced. if the passing game picks up then he wouldn't be much needed. mind you, i am not in favor of this at all but i can see it.

I would keep Gamble, easily. And Jordan Gross is a fantastic Left Tackle, which is one of the hardest-to-find positions in the NFL. Of course, I don't believe that the lock-out will happen, so I'm obviously not AS concerned with it as you are.

A note about our secondary: While it does look questionable, or defensive front makes it look even worse than what it is. Your DBs are only as good as your QB pressure.

we had enough cap space this season to ensure we were a contender- Jerry isnt worried about that. He is worried about his wallet and 2011..

We had all the cap space we wanted, but Jerry is trying to look good since he is the chairman of the owners on the CBA. We have never been worth a damn for two years in a row, now or ever, and I'm sick of it. I'll be glad when we are sold and moved so i'll quit wasting my money on a sorry franchise who will never be good or have the fan support cause of the city its in!

D-Will is a bargain at the current salary and is a FA in 2011

adding a decent WR opposite smith wouldn't have fixed it but it would have helped. only one i really wish we had gotten is boldin (though if i was him and had a choice of going to the ravens or the panthers, i'd probably go to the ravens). housh is too busy being a whiner these days. i'm pretty happy that we didn't bring him in.

there just wasn't much to choose from this year. everyone else would have been overpriced. when the CBA gets worked out then there should be quite a few nice alternatives. it will be a buyers market then and we'll have a lot of money totake advantage of it (not that hurney likes doing that kind of thing). until then we get to see which of the young and cheap guys we have already can get the job done and then go from there filling in what holes we have.
