The Cardinals' defensive line

GJ on countering yourself in your own post.

You just showed us how a good coaching staff can put together an effective unit, by developing their players, regardless of their position in the draft or FA.

How that pertains to us I have no idea....

Cyberjag loves our coaches. He was defending Henning after he was fired. He's also been defending Trgo as well.

how did henning do in miami this year, how did that team turn around with a vet oc calling plays with no true wr, and a noodle arm qb?

You're right. We shouldve kept our offensive coordinator with his non-creative, very predictable play calls of run-run-pass. And his infamous draw plays on 3rd downs.

I'm still confused about how the Cards d-line is a good unit. They struggled defensively all year. They aren't good against the run and are about average at rushing the passer. Just because they are winning with what they have doesn't make them good all of the sudden.

He just said they were effective, not good.

They definitely made plays vs us and Atlanta though.

I think our success on defense is very dependent on Peppers. Do we not rely on the front four to get pressure? Is he not the career sacks leader in Carolina? Is he not the only defensive lineman to average more than 10 sacks a year?
You're right, he was our most talented defensive lineman. He was our highest draft pick ever, he was the most physically gifted player we ever had, and once he decided he wanted out last year he went through the motions. This year he showed us what he could do at times when he was auditioning for a new team.

Trgovac has tried all kinds of ways to use him to unleash his potential, but only Peppers can do that. Now that he's trying to coach the line as a unit instead of a disappearing star and three other guys, maybe he'll get better results.

I think our coaches are a lot better than they get credit for. We just went 12-4 and people are calling for Fox's head, for crying out loud. Henning wasn't the entire problem while he was here, and I maintain he's a good offensive coordinator in the NFL. The people in Miami certainly think so. I think his time here ran it's course, and I think Trgovac's may have finally done so as well. if you read the whole board you'll note that I've said I think he's out of here, but I also think that he'll get another DC job soon enough and will turn in another respectable performance in that one.

I believe in John Fox. I think he does his best to put a good team on the field and works hard with his coordinators to win as many games as possible, and since he's been here he and his staff have won way more games than most staffs in the NFL. But this thread isn't about coaching; as much as you and some others want an excuse to bash the staff there are other things to talk about.

People are moaning about losing a defensive star, but it's a team sport. You don't have to have superstars at every position to excel. When we had a great line our linebackers were pedestrian at best. Now we have great linebackers and our line is iffy. Well, look at the Cards--they're winning with a collection of so-so players on the line right now. It can be done, and I believe we can do it next year.

Meet the Cardinals' defensive line:

Antonio Smith, 5th round pick in the 2004 draft.

Bryan Robinson, undrafted free agent in 1997.

Darnell Dockett, 3rd round pick in the 2004 draft.

Travis LaBoy, 2nd round pick in the 2004 draft.

No pro-bowlers, no first round draft picks, no superstars. But, an effective unit nonetheless.

I know some people will use this as an excuse to bash the coaching staff, but the fact is a lot of good lines out there aren't packed with stars. We don't need Peppers to be effective, and we're going to be just fine on defense next year.

No mention of Bert Berry?

I do think Henning is a better OC than Davidson. Can you imagine what he would have done with this year's OL, Williams, and Stewart? He threw to the backs a lot, ran screens to Smitty all the time, and almost never threw the ball without play-action. Look at how he used Williams as a rookie, you saw the wildcat against Atlanta two years ago. Think Davidson would have done that? I don't, and I have yet to see anything out of his playcalling to suggest otherwise. Had Henning called the game against Arizona, you can bet we wouldn't have quit running after the second series.

Henning ran his course here, but that doesn't make him a bad OC. Neither does this season define Trgovac--he's been a good DC since he started and he remains one. I appreciate the fact that you think you're smarter than Fox and understand how awful his staff is in ways he doesn't, but you're just a lonely voice on a message board and I put a lot more value in what his actions say he thinks. Sorry if I burst any bubbles there, but it is what it is.

Sorry, but this thread is about coaching. You brought up guy's that aren't superstars but yet are working together in the playoffs with a great outcome. That stems from coaching.

Peppers was the only great d-lineman we had. He averaged 10 sacks a year and just registered his highest sack total of the year with 14.5. He didnt have much help elsewhere on the line. Now that he's going to be gone, our defensive line is going to take a big hit. Yeah we have other guys on the line that are decent, but they aren't very good and aren't consistant. Thats not working together as a unit with a great outcome and that stems from coaching.
