What do you think we can get for Peppers.

2 first rounders. i think we slap the non-exclusive tag on him. if he wants to go somewhere then he and his agent has to do the work. it takes the burden off of us to find a place. if he can't find a place then we get him for another year for him to try and impress someone by showing up.

win-win for us, imo.

if he gets traded quickly then go after a big name DE, DT, or CB.

the 1st rounders will not be from the same year so it will be easier for some team to swallow.

the good thing about this is WE don't have to find trade partners...he does.

I think a lot of people are going to be disapointed with what the Panthers finally get for Peppers. All GMs know the predicament the Panthers are in with Gross and Peppers. They are going to wait and hope to get the steal of the century. Many teams do not want the expense that will come with signing Peppers. Peppers will take many teams out of the competition because they do not fit his expectations. I feel like Pep the Panthers and the fans are going to be disapointed.

A few problems with this.

1) Gross's situation will likely be resolved before FA even starts (one way or the other), so really won't factor into this at all.

2) And while GM's know Peppers wants out, they also know that there will be a lot of other teams that also covet him. And that breeds competition for his rights. And believe me, there will be more than one team that sees him as the piece to put them over the top. And teams MUCH prefer a known all-star in his prime over an unknown rookie that may or may not pan out...especially in this weak year for DE's in the draft.

3) Nobody knows what the Panthers will do if they don't get a deal they like. Many fans assume they cannot handle the cap hit and don't want the distraction, so will just dump him. But I do not think that is the case at all. I don't believe they will let anybody rape them in a Peppers deal. They may not get as much as they want, but no way do they accept a bad offer (anything that doesn't include either a 1st, or top player). I have no doubt they would eat it rather than do that. But it will never come to that. Someone (probably a couple of teams) will pony up a decent package for his rights.

4) I believe Peppers will be more receptive to wherever we send him than many think. His agent was just posturing and trying to have some say in where he goes. But Pep wants out, plain and simple. It doesn't matter what we do, or who we fire or what scheme we employ, Peppers has drawn a line in the sand, and just simply wants out. So, when push comes to shove, he'll accept just about anyplace that is not Carolina...except maybe known dysfunctional teams like the Raiders or Lions.

If I had to guess, I think the team would love two firsts, think they can get a first and second, but would probably accept a deal similar to Allen's last year. So any deal they accept will probably fall within that value range (whether multiple picks or players). My bet is that they end up with a first and second from a team drafting in the 15-25 range.

Probably the most objective, well thought out post, on the subject.

Nicely done, and I agree wholeheartedly. People who think we're screwed and Peppers holds the cards are delusional. We still own his rights, and could continue to do so, if we wanted.

I would be happy to just get the 1st rounder we gave away.

Anything after that is bonus IMO.

We drafter him, paid him, and he played out his contract.

Im happy.

Time to move on. This is Beasons defense now.

I concur. lets just hope we continue our recent drafting success because looking back through some of the drafts after the 2003 draft we have been doing quite well... speaking of the 2003 draft haha:

119 Carolina Panthers Colin Branch Safety Stanford

120 New England Patriots Asante Samuel Cornerback Central Florida

gosh darnit

If we are being realistic, and thinking subjectively, then there are only 9 teams in the NFL that emplore a 34 base defense. That greatly reduces the teams that we could trade with, because being realistic, no 4-3 team will trade for a guy that does not want to play in their defensive scheme. They would be essentially buying our problem, and no team in their right mind would do that. Peppers announcing he wants to play in the 34 defense hurt us badly. Obviously, this is all dependant upon us using the franchise tag on Peppers.

Here are a list of 3-4 defenes in the NFL: (Houston Texans do not run a base 34 defense)

Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, San Fran 49ers, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, San Diego Chargers, New York Jets

Then we need to break down that list into:

#1. Who has enough cap to give Peppers a big time deal.

#2. Who has a need at OLB

#3. Peppers needs to agree to the deal and want to play for the team we are trading him to. Again, no team wants to trade for a guy that does not want to play for them.

With this list we can take our the Steelers, Browns, 49ers, Ravens, Steelers, Cowboys, Jets from that list. Leaving the Dolphins and Chargers to the only one's that will be competing for Peppers services because the others teams just will not have the cap, need, or prestige to get a deal done.

All that being said, I think we trade Peppers to the Dolphins for their #25 overall, and a conditional pick in the 2010 draft based on individual performance. 1st round max, 3rd round minimum

i dont think 34 teams are our only option. i think anyone who presents a good offer, we will listen to

dolphins arent a bad prediction at all. also, dont underestimate Browns, they have a disgruntled fan base and a new regime looking to shake things up. i think the 9ers have money too

The Carolina Panthers will listen to all trades, but if you read my entire post, not only will the Panthers, and the pending team need to agree on a deal, so will Peppers. No team will trade for Peppers if he does not want to play on their team. I do not think Peppers will want to play for the 49ers or the Browns..

You have to also factor in the risk for a team putting him at OLB. It's been discussed plenty on this board and while most fans agree that he'd do well at the position other team might not agree. He might not want all the money of a top defensive player, but they still have to give up picks for someone who's not proven at the position.

He played OLB for us essentially when they dropped him back in coverage, and I can't remember him doing anything all that special in coverage.

Peppers is delusional if he thinks his best role is anything other than a pure pass rusher.

He's never made any plays dropping back, but he's definitely shut down what the offense was trying to do. The ability for him to shut down passing lanes with his size is greatly under appreciated.
