WR Sucktitude: Scouting or System

I figure we should make a thread about this after another failed drafted WR's career here

what say you?

If you think it's scouting, basically, you're counting against the probability that eventually, someone would work out, and figuring that our scouting department couldn't notice a good WR if Jerry Rice came up to them and moon kicked them in the testicles

If you think it's the system, you're blaming Davidson, Henning, Richard Williamson, Tyke Tolbert, Jake's tendency to call designed plays for Smith and any associated party on our lack of ability to have WRs thrive there for so many years.

Or you can blame it on something else if you so dare to be different like this kid...

Seems to me people are judging to quickly. At least in regards to the rookies we have.

For a receiver, it takes 3 years for them to really come into their own, and become a true pro.

As for Colbert, he had a great rookie year. Then fell off the map. Sad.

Jarrett, he was never a professional. He never had the work ethic, nor the desire to be one of the best, and it showed.

The draft is always a crap shot. Yes, it has been VERY frustrating that they haven't found a receiver good enough to be a starter opposite of Steve Smith in the last 5 years. But we do have a crop of receivers, that deserve their chance to show whether they can make it or not, and you can't judge that in the first year.

Although I will say, Gettis has shown that he has the ability, and the desire. I believe he'll be a good receiver, good enough to be a starter in this league, sooner rather than later.

As Gantt has repeatedly pointed out, there's not much to evaluate. Only high picks were Colbert who had a great rookie season then disappeared. Ryan Robinson who suffered an injury he couldn't recover from and Jarrett, a complete bust.

Everyone else has been a 5th round pick or later.

WR is a very tough position to evaluate. For every Steve Smith there are dozens of Dwayne Jarrett's.

It's a number things. A lack of actually giving a poo is one of them. The one guy who actually was servicable (Carter) they let go. Then they don't bother to draft anyone except Robinson and Jarrett. Though I will say Robinson showed some promise before he got hurt.

It's also bad game planning and play calling.

Only thing I blame on everyone is no one is accepting the fact there is a weakness in the way their drafting. The FO, coaches or whoever can't draft a WR. They are good at defense, LBs, Rbs, O line and suck at others so far like QBs, WRs. But despite this they go and try and draft the entire team when they should have filled the holes with vets ($). This has a lot to do with the salary though as does much of what was done this year. What makes it worse is we are a run based team and have been under Fox which means we have never needed much of a receiver.

You're not referring to Drew Carter are you?

Because that would be funny.

At the college level secondaries are generally terrible. Busted coverage is so common place that it seems as if the teams don't even practise. This makes it more difficult for scouts to evaluate WRs. Take Jarrett for example, he won a lot of jump balls against undersized CBs, and he often found himself wide open due to busted coverage.

Questionable hand, bionic knees and no ability run any direction other than straight.

QFT. He was a project when drafted, and he never was good enough for us to keep, even with us looking for a receiver. What does that have to say about looking for a receiver?

The rest of this post has nothing to do with JOAT's post.

And what does being a run first offense, and coaching have to do with finding a receiver?

I'll tell you the ONLY thing that it affects, is we look for receivers that are willing to block.

You also have to take into considerate our other needs, and players available around our draft picks. It's so easy to say "they never drafted a receiver worth a damn", when we needed linemen, linebackers, other players, that more often than not, WR was not the BPA at the time of those draft picks.

if jerry doesnt pick someone up for us while smitty is down, then it just proves that he really doesnt give a poo about anything other than money.

First of all, Hurney is the GM. He brings players in. Not Jerry.

Second, who is he gonna bring in? Who is available (besides Vincent, and please don't mention him), that is even worth bringing in? At this point, the only option would be to dangle D. Williams for one of the top 3 receivers in Greenbay.
