Trading Williams a good thing?

Recommended Posts

There are only two cases where I agree with trading away a good player:

1) You get an equally good player in return (very rare)

2) You get a ridiculously overvalued package of draft picks (equally rare)

Barring one of those outcomes, it is never a positive to trade away a good player...never :nonod:

I say yes.

Now, before proceeding, let me say this: I'm currently doubtful that it will happen and if it does happen I'll bitch and moan with the best of them. Ok, moving on...

There's obvious cons to losing D-Will. He's a huge percentage of the offense, a legitimately talented running back, and just a swell guy to support in general. I doubt the downside needs to be discussed in detail, because any Panther fan that doesn't understand the downside...well, I hope you enjoyed your three year coma, welcome to 2010, we suck.

But what about the upside? First, we could probably get a pick or two to make up for the losses in bad draft day trades of days past. Also, we might be able to plug in a new, more experienced player into one of our areas of need to help with development of younger players. And, let's face it, a player trade at this point would at least be entertaining for us huddled masses.

Is there another upside though? Because weighing those pros and cons evenly, I'd have to say that the trade would be a moronic idea. So, I thought to myself "Self, why would they do something that is so obviously stupid on the surface?" The first answer I came up with is that this move would just be par for the course as far as stupid moves this season are concerned. The second answer I came up with is Mike Goodson.

Goodson is showing a lot of promise in his time on field this year. The kind of promise that a lot of us were hoping for last year when we drafted him. It's pretty clear that he brings something new to the offense that simply didn't add into the equation before. With the obvious emphasis on rebuilding the passing game this year, however, Goodson's role becomes even more apparent and needed. Williams and Stewart have average recieving abilities out of the backfield, where Goodson excels at it (comparatively). That kind of x-factor in a passing game is quite desirable. Developing it alongside a new QB and a mostly new recieving corps could pay off amazing dividends down the road. So long as we're trying to accomodate two top tier running backs, the reps aren't there to develop that kind of dynamic.

So, IF the Williams trade does happen, THEN that will be the final signal to me that a change in philosophy is in the works (and that change would probably include an overhaul of the coaching staff). I can see the upside to it all, and in the long term I think it'll be well worth it. In the short term, it'll really piss me off. But in all reality, the short term looks pretty bleak anyway so all we have to go on is the long term.

At least, that's how I'm rationalizing it in my head. Yay team.

WTH, I don't understand why there are so many people here that want or keep talking about trading D Will. He is by far the best RB on the team. Yes Goodson is playing well right now, but I don't have a lot of confidence in Stew. He can't stay healthy and don't have the breakaway speed of D Will. D Will is our running game, everything else in the run game feeds off of him. NO TRADE!

I think a trade of Smith would be more likely that D-Will. We absolutely could get a 1st and another pick/player. We are definitely not going to be competing for the off season, we really should trade some of our well loved players who are reaching that point in their career. We had to of learned something from not being able to trade Peppers, but I think Smith is such a greater value to Pep for his contract as well his great abilities being hidden on a weak passing game and run first kind of philosophy. Ill def, miss smity, but it would be worth it

Neither Smith nor Williams would get you a first & another player, but possibly a 2nd and another player... It really comes down to if the value of the draft pick and players would be worth the loss.

IMO, it wouldn't be worth trading either of them.

Only way he gets traded is if the FO has already decided that they will not be offering him a new contract. Which I hope is not the case, but if it is the case, I can see them trying to get something for him before his contract expires, he moves on and they get nothing good for him.

I wish we could see more of Double Trouble though.

You have to keep in mind that Williams' contract is up at the end of the year.

He's is a talented player, and the loss would hurt, sure. But what's best for the team in the long run, getting a package of draft picks to build for the future or keeping him for 12 more games in a losing season?

The biggest mistake here would be to let Williams hit free agency at the end of the season. He has stated previously that he wanted to stay in Carolina, but what happens when we finish the year as one of the worst teams in the league and a championship contender is dangling a massive contract in front of him?

A decision needs to be made soon, sign him to an extension or trade him. It doesn't look like either is happening, however. As usual, the Panthers FO prefers to take no action and play the "wait and see" game. Something that could potentially backfire and make it more likely that Williams walks at years end and leaves the team with no compensation at all.

you need two RBs to be successful in today's NFL. if we get rid of deangelo, then we would just have to draft another one. we need to use our draft picks on other areas of need.

pretty soon, we are going to be playing in 18 game seasons. we need to good RBs in order to be successful, and i dont think that the production form stewart/goodson would be near as good as the production from williams stewart.

we cant depend on goodson to be our main RB if and when stewart goes down for his yearly injury.

also, though i had a different opinion last year, i think that deangelo is better than stewart. we need to keep them together, and i am hoping that is why the FO has decided to save all of the money this year.

Um, Stewart has never missed a game. A Stewart/Goodson duo is still a stronger 1-2 punch than a lot of teams have

Considering William's contract is ending after this season, why would any team offer a trade for him when it isn't guaranteed he would sign an extension with them? They could just wait til after the season and sign him without having to give us anything.

I would support a three way trade with say the Packers and Chargers.

We give Dwill to the packers, the packers give the required pics to the chargers, and we get Jackson.

I love Dwill but we do have 3 very good backs behind him. We need the receiver more going forward.

Yay! We lose one of the best running back in the league.. we get draft picks and we get a receiver that is banned for 4 games, and wants to get paid...yay!

no.

So your offense has few play-makers...and struggling for consistency..leave to my beloved Panthers and some of its fans to want to trade a guy rushing over 5 yards a carry. HE runs like the Devil...take DeAngelo out...we cant have all these big plays...our owner has a bad heart....

...we need a second round pick...to draft another running back.. or yet another WR who was a punter in division 2 that we want to convert. ugh.

Just follow the money when rationalizing front office and coaching decisions.....if DeAngelo has a bad season..the front office can low ball his F.A. offer...and make him less attractive in the open market... this has a conspiracy slant to it which I probably do not believe but when asking why...follow the money.
