Contract Idea

I've been wondering something lately. There's a disagreement between owners and the players association about labor dispute. Here's just a speculative idea I came up with.

How different would the NFL be if teams could only sign players to 1 year contracts? Players seem to be at their very best in a contract year for some reason, so why not take this element to the extreme? Every year, guys are playing for their job. From Peyton Manning to seat warmer what's-his-name. There could be certain designations like RFA versus UFA so teams would be protected from losing their players without compensation, but players could be exchanged instead of just draft picks.

Another idea in this vein could be only allowing teams to sign a certain number of players to contracts longer than 1 year. That way you can protect your key guys, but new guys coming in are aspiring to get one of those long term contracts. I was thinking 22, just the amount needed to fill a starting lineup.

This is all in the idea of getting better and more competitive football, and perhaps trimming the payscale to more reasonable amounts, especially for rookies. Players in the current system often jump ship because they will get paid more money elsewhere. I think this system improves on that by offering more options to teams. Kind of a supply and demand thing.

Just an idea. Won't ever happen.
