Something to Think About: Clausen vs Bradford

The Rams have tailored their offence to Bradford's strengths (short, high percentage throws). The Panthers....not so much.

Agreed. I don't blame Clausen or the Oline......I blame the coaching staff. You have to install plays that play to your players strenghts or ones that cover their weakness. We don't run any pass plays that will build a QB's confidence. All day long Brees played pitch and catch with his recievers....RB,TE, FB and WR's. Peyton called a great game against us....running mis-direction, swing passes, over loads, etc. Anything to keep us off balance on defense. What did we do on offense? We ran a successful screen pass on the first play and never ran another one the entire game. No swing passes to slow the pass rush, believe it or not....I really don't remember any draws. IMO.......if your QB is young and your Oline is struggling..........you do things to help them, not just run the same old tired poo plays.

Don't you know?

Any QB that has the nerve to take the field over the great Moore stands no chance of ever being a good QB.

The only solution to the problem is to put the Mighty Moore back in.

Never, have I suggested that, and I haven't seen anyone else in this thread suggest it either. I don't know what happened to Moore from last year, other than maybe other teams studying game film on him and our usual shitty playcalling. Peyton Manning may be the only QB in the league that would have any chance of looking good behind this OL, and that's b/c he can basically call his own game, and I'm not so sure that would make a difference... Our OL is playing like poo and the playcalling only complicates that issue.

Maybe I watched a different game but I was fairly certain we were in a position to win it yesterday

Yeah but it never really felt like it. I was really excited after Jimmy completed that 4th down pass and thought we could be witnessing history. Then reality and the coaching staff set in, lol... It just never felt like we were going to hold on to the win, and then when we fell behind, with this offense I don't know how you would be very confident we would come back, but I held onto hope.

Like I said, I don't know if Clausen is the answer, we won't know until we see more... I certainly hope he is, but it's hard to tell what we've got with him with the poo job the coaches and OL are doing. Any QB in there is pretty much handcuffed. Additionally, I don't think MM is the answer either and never really felt he was, but he deserved the shot he got and lost it. I just hope Clausen is the man so we don't have to end up like Cleveland and spend 11 or 12 years looking for one...

New England had to do some major adjustments when Brady was injured and they started Matt Cassell. The difference between us and them of course is that New England made those adjustments and went 11-5 and barely missed the playoffs.

Clausen's first game was against a team that might have the best pair of corners in the league and made the playoffs last year. His second game was against last year's Super Bowl Champions, in one of the loudest stadiums in the league.

Bradford's 4 starts have been against the Cardinals, Raiders, Redskins, and Seahawks. Not exactly a murderer's row of defenses.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's obvious we have problems that run much deeper than just QB, but through all the discussion many have pointed out that depending on how good the QB is, the QB will make the rest of the team better.

Well, saw the highlights of the Rams win over SD today, and Bradford threw a 38-yard TD pass to Danario Alexander who they just pulled off of the practice squad this week. Wow. Alexander was targeted 5 times and had 4 catches for 72 yards, the aforementioned TD, and drew a holding penalty in the 4th quarter on a defender to give the Rams a go ahead score.

If Clausen starts next week, I really hope to see some REAL progress. I've been encouraged by Gettis' development, I'm excited about what Thomas can bring to the table and I would like to see the playcalling be conducive to success. I hope we can answer whether we have our QB for the future before this year is over. For those of you worried about becoming the Lions, that's the key to NOT becoming the Lions...

CLausen is playing with horrible WRs besides Smitty, and the OLine is terrible right now.

We cut all veterans and rebuilding this year. The Rams have been rebuilding for the last 3-4 years with top 10 picks every year. That makes a huge difference.

Clausen will be great, I hope, but it's going to take some time and at least an O-line that can give him some time in the pocket.

I honestly didn't expect Clausen to start any this year, unless there was an injury to Moore. But Moore has looked completely lost from pre-season to the first 2 games.

Again this is a rebuilding year and we have some very talented young players that will develop in do time. Once we get Otah back at 100% and Smitty back, I think things will change up alot!

I'm not trying to get on any hate train (or any train for that matter) but also consider what McCoy did today: 23/33 281 yds 1 td 2 int...and a lot of people didn't expect to see him for around 2 years including that coaching staff

Watching Colt may be much more relate-able than Bradford imo

And yeah, we have one of the worst playbooks and play designers in the NFL so we're barely giving our QBs the opportunity to succeed a rookie or not

Bradford sees to have a little bit more time to throw on most plays though. McCoy looked promising in his first start too, boy does he have pocket presence...

Yeah, I was disappointed that they didn't show any of his highlights in the CLE/PIT package, but saw his stats were excellent for a first start, especially against possibly the best defense in the NFL. I was honestly a little surprised b/c I thought they said there was some issue with arm strength in the pre-season, or at least he didn't look too hot.

FWIW, I thought he was going to end up the best pro out of all the QBs this draft.

As others have said though, Bradford's WRs are pretty much all practice squaders, ours outside of Smitty have been a 2 3rd rounders, a 2nd rounder, and a 6th rounder. As I said, it's not all on the QB, but Clausen's numbers have been horrible, Moore's weren't great either, and we have the best RBs out of us, St. Louis, and the Browns.

Ahh. . .Danario Alexander. I had been hoping the Panthers would pick him up when he recovered from offseason surgery, but alas. . .

Yeah, that's unbelievable, IIRC, he led the nation in rec. yards last year but he went undrafted b/c he had knee injuries/surgery last year... Apprently he went with STL b/c of the Mizzou connection...
