I don't think losing Smith for a week or three is that bad a thing.

i can see this and i really hope this is right. i just know that now there is going to be an extra defender roaming around making life difficult for the offense. as much potential as gettis has, he doesn't yet demand double coverage. we'll probably be seeing 9 and 10 coming into the box now and blitzes coming from more places than we ever thought possible.

i really hope this turns into a positive but until i see that actually happen, i'm going to be skeptical....at least for this year. down the road it might be ok but right now not so much.

Hate to say it but Smith has become dead weight.

That's right, if you are going to keep acting like a little bi&tch then I got no respect for you Smitty.

The guy has become a sideshow. A distraction. The guy has made clear he was in favor of Moore starting and took the week off when Clausen became the starter.

Then he yells at a rookie quarterback instead of teaching him.

I've been watching Jimmy Clausen for years and I've never seen him so hesitant.

With Smith out, hopefully he starts viewing this offense as "his" team. No more distractions. Time to get down business.

Smitty just doesn't seem to have any patience w/Jimmy. I agree for the most part.....but we really could have used him on that last drive. even if he wasn't getting the ball, the attention he gets could have helped on the final possession.

At this piont the Panthers need to build for the future. Smith needs to make a decision. Either he needs to communicate to the brass that he wants out of Carolina to try and win a superbowl or he needs to decide that he is going to be a teacher. In other words, he needs to do what he is not doing today.

I think a QB should be able to handle pressure and his team mates. If he cant then he will not do well. It looks to me that Jimmy told Smith that he was not going to force balls to Smith and Smith dose not like that. Jimmys response.... No balls to Smith. Say what you will but Clausen has to become the leader and that involves telling Smith to STFU sometimes.

we could just take it to the next level and bench vets here and there week to week during the season. Could be a good idea. This season is fuged either way. bench all of em, start our young players, hire people to incite riots at the stadium, and get a new mascot, not necessarily in that order.

I think the deal is that Smith ALWAYS wants the ball. He's possibly one of the best clutch players of all time (any team). But, at the same point he can be somewhat babyish. I don't mean that in a contrite "F*** SMITH" kinda way. I think he may be one of my all time favorite players. He will be vocal if he is displeased, and Jimmy needs to put him in line or listen depending on why he is upset. I almost wish they would trade him because the dude deserves a Super Bowl, and I don't think he will get one with Carolina within the span of his career. Jimmy needs to listen to him, and then tell him like it is....whether Steve likes the answer or not.

now were turning on smith.....it's different when your on the outside looking in compared to actually be in smitty shoes.

and if he wants out are we gonna act like we did when peppers wanted out?

Unfortunately, a lot of people here will bury Smitty.

    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
    • I didn't say I would have done it. I was just saying that I can see why some in the FO considered it. Everything was done to give Bryce weapons. Solidify the interior line thru FA. Get XL at WR in round 1 and then get the most talented RB in round 2. Take a TE in round 4, etc They were probably "assuming" he'd make a complete recovery during the 2024 season. I'm a skeptical person. I wouldn't have assumed he'd be ok in 2024. I personally would have taken another position in the 2nd for that very reason. But, if I were "influenced" to take him I would've argued to keep him off the field, especially seeing how things were going for us record wise. Conventional Wisdom says most backs don't get back to normal until two years after the ACL surgery. He was injured in Fall 2023. Having him suit up in 2025 would have been almost 2 years since the original injury. You have him for 3 year on low contract. If he balls out, you resign him for a couple of more years b/c he'd only have 3 years of tread on the tires. If he's ok but not great you let him walk.
