Why I think Pepp wants out

I think Fox has made the mistake of spending money in the wrong places on our defense. For our cover-2 defense to work, our front 4 needs to consistantly generate pressure on the QB. You need a DT who is outstanding at pass rushing, and 2 DEs who are well above average. With this combination, you can scare the hell out of any QB. You break his rythm, he rushes his throws, you get sacs, turnovers, you prevent long pass plays from developing... ect.

But how can a team afford such a dominant front for to play great cover-2? You skimp on the secondary. If a corner or safety in the system startings asking for money, let him walk. The system made him. What amazes me is that Fox went out and drafted Gamble in the first round, and then later brought in Lucus for 6 million a year. What? Rucker retires and lame DEs are drafted to replace him. Lewis, a terrible pass rusher is brought in from... the Rams. Then Jenkins leaves and no one is brought in to replace him.

Peppers response :dita: :auto:

My response :(

If we're going to play cover-2, then we need to rebuild our d-line.

True about front four to matchc our scheme

Problem is, why didn't Fox and them been realized our front line isn't good at getting to the QB

Blitzing and going to man to man would be logical adjustments

If only our corners can cover man to man.

Peppers wants out in part because he's sick of North Carolina. Read his agents interview--even if we change defenses to a 3-4 he wants to leave. He's not interested in playing for this coach, with these teammates, for this franchise, in this state. He's got it in his head that he'll be a bigger star anywhere else, and that it's somehow the fault of our staff that he didn't reach his full potential. We've put him on both sides of the line, played him in space, in the middle, up close, dropped back, in coverage, as an outside blitzer, as an inside blitzer, and at wide receiver, but somehow we didn't use him in a way that allowed him to show what a dominant player he can be.

Personally, I've seen him take enough plays off that I think he's wrong. I bought into the whole "Peppers is sick" storyline last year, but I'm back to thinking he just wasn't that interested, and this year was his audition for other teams, an audition that ended sometime after the first turnover last Saturday It won't surprise me if he goes to a 3-4 somewhere and ends up as just another linebacker, although a very big and talented one. It's sad, but at least it won't be our problem any more.

Its the fault of the player and the coach when a guy like Pep takes plays off. I'm not going to guess on details of the problems between this organization and Peppers but motivation was obviously a key and that is a huge part of being a head coach. Maybe Pep is not able to be motivated tho...

At the pro level, it shouldn't be about a coach trying to coax the most talent out of his players. Coaches at this level need to be strong tacticians and personnel men, not motivational speakers. That's why so many strong college coaches fail at the pro level.

Peppers is given millions of reasons not to take plays off. If that's not enough, he needs to find another line of work.
