Earth-like planet discovered

Been there, done that. It's a dump. Nothing but a bunch of Edosians. They have an orange complexion, two yellow eyes, three arms and three dog-like legs and you can't tell the difference between the males and females. Believe me, I kept trying to figure it out.

You ever studied the Lorentz factor? It's some crazy stuff. Basically in a nutshell, if you travel faster than the speed of light, the space-time around you moves slower than the space time for you. So you could leave Earth travelling SUPER fast and only 10 years past for you, but 100 years past on Earth. That's basically what Einstein was talking about when he said time travel was possible.

I think it's funny how Star Trek doesn't deal with the time consequences of their "warp drive" technology. Big plot hole IMO.

There's also a theory that says you could travel at double the speed of light and return BEFORE you left. Space time is crazy. All theoretical though.

Smh. First of all, you can't travel faster than light, because it takes an infinte amount of energy and time to travel at the speed of light, nevemind faster.

What you're talking about is time dilation. Time is relative. So, if you travel at 99% of the speed of light, and you stayed at this speed for 10 years, thousands of years pass to someone on Earth. Its the faster you go, your clocks ticks normally, but anything not moving at your speed will tick slower than you and vice versa.

Like I said, thats not time travel. Its time dilation. We're time traveling right now. We're moving to the future at one secord per second. When you travel fast, you just get there faster than you would have it you weren't.

FTL travel isn't the only obstacle. There are so many problems with deep space travel that the first "space pilgrims" are almost 100% certain to die on the way there. Food/water supply, effects of simulated gravity on the body, etc. Not to mention that if anything went wrong, it would take us years to receive the distress call.

You wouldn't want to send humans to a planet with different life forms from what we have here on Earth anyway. Probes will probably be the first to make "contact" with alien life.

Like I sai, you can't travel faster than light. The ONLY thing that MIGHT be able to travel FTL is.........light. Since light does have mass, you could, in theory, build a probe, made out of photons. You speed up your probe, that is really a light beam, and off you go.

how do they get "Earth like" ? that planet is tidally locked, has no moon to anchor it down on a stable axis, 3x the mass of earth. they don't even know whats on the surface. the only thing they have in common, is that they are in a habitable zone. that's like saying Venus is earth like.

Dude, we can BARELY detect planets. It could have 7898 moons, and we wouldn't know. Don't assume anything yet. And you're right, its tidally locked, but life can thrive on the terminator, and micros can live on the dark side, and thrive. Maybe with the heat from the core of the planet. The side facing the sun...or its star is probably devoid of life, but life can thrive on the terminator. Probably plant life. I doubt any marcos are there, maybe, but I doubt it.

ITs Earth Like because its the first planet we know of that is *CAPABLE* of supporting life as we know it. Thats huge. Even if this one sucks balls, the fact that we've found it this early either means we're lucky, or these kind of planets are everywhere.

no doubt, but the main problem i have is them saying its "earth like" just because maybe it can support plant life or microbes. moons in our solar system could possibly do that. its a huge find tho.

We don't actually know that. Human knowledge, even though it has expanded a lot over the last few hundred years, is still extremely limited. We believe there are limits on ftl travel, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way around that restriction.
