What is everybody's lovefest with Gruden?

Seriously? I don't get why so many people want Gruden as HC when he really didn't do much in Tampa Bay. Sure, he won a Superbowl BUT lets remember that the team that was assembled was by Tony Dungy and not Gruden.

Furthermore, the main reason he was fired was because players and the FO thought he was too aggressive.

What makes you think that Jerry Richardson would hire a coach who can't even get his players to respect him?

don't know that many people around here are.

harbaugh and cowher seems to get brought up up a lot though..

Yeah I keep seeing these names popping up but likely not happening.

In regards to Harbaugh, I am too afraid to take a college coach because I am afraid that the NFL will be too much for them.

I think peoples infatuation with Gruden comes from the fact that he's everywhere now. Hes on MNF, hes on ESPN all the time, he had his little QB camp, he had Champ camp....Its like a 365 day advertisement for the man so he's gotta be a good coach here right? He won the NFC South 3 out of 7 times compared with Fox winning 2 out of 8.

This week has been dead at my work so I have had nothing better to do than look for who I would prefer as our next head coach.

That being said I never fell in love with any 1 guy, if theres a brilliant new young coach out there I can't find one with proven experience/results to make me single them out.

*I realize Harbaugh's out there but have dismissed him as a # 1 candidate due to the lack of success previous guys have made in trying to make the jump from college to the pros. Also saw a quote on Bill Polian saying its much tougher than it looks and impossible to have immediate success in their first year.

I really want an offensive coach that can also serve as the playcaller on offense as well.

Its too hard to predict if theres a good offensive skill position coach out there ready to make the leap to lead our franchise to greatness for years to come.

This leaves me stuck to look at retreads.

Marty Schottenheimers too old

Bill Cowher is a defensive coach, and Bettis has been insuating he's always wanted to coach the Giants.

Maybe a small chance a guy like Norv Turner becomes available but far from guranteed nor worthy of getting overly excited abut.

Grudens the only one with a decent resume who would fit my personal preference as a head coach and offensive play caller. Some credit his superbowl win to Dungy and thats ok but I bet a conservative guy like Fox could have managed to screw that team up instead of taking them all the way. He also did good with Oakland getting them to the superbowl and never coached a team with a QB with the potential Jimmy has.

In 11 seasons as a head coach his record isnt fantastic (95-81) but I think he did a good job maximizing the talent he had on his rosters. Lastly every time I see him talk about the panthers it seems liked he'd love to come here.

He has that fiery personality, the famous "chucky" scowl, he is the anti-Fox. When you want a replacement coach, the tendency is to think as far down the spectrum from what you're used to, whether it's a good fit or not.

He's great in the MNF booth, he should stay there.

The problem with a lot of college coaches is that they don't have much experience in/with the NFL. Jim has been a player and a coach at the NFL level before.

The next head coach thing is far too amusing to get very serious about, but it would be interesting to know why people think the way they do.

For example, why is Gruden's name brought up and not Tony Dungy? Aren't they both just as "retired" as the other guy? Not that I'm advocating a play for Dungy because I personally can't stand how he's suddenly become the league's spiritual advisor and mentor to all players who have been demonized as heathens for their off-field transgressions.

Just as interesting is the manner in which people will justify to themselves and/or each other their willingness to put the weight of the team on the shoulders of a rookie QB but those same people want a recycled head coach.

    • Your thoughts? I don't think the trade up or even down value system stays exactly in place this year. Look at all the bad trades that hurt teams that give away too much (49ers for Lance, even us w/the Bears set us back). What trade up except Mahomes/KC was it really a great trade for the team giving up a lot? Same with trading down. Teams will know you don't want to pick and they won't be giving the store to move up because there is not a generational talent to do that for. Now, I believe these possibilities.  The Giants probably won't take QB-Sanders at 3, it's too much pressure if it doesn't work. They don't really need another edge rusher with Carter. I can see them possibly saving face, trade down to even the Panthers at 8 but not asking for a kings ransom. A 1st round swap, a 3rd and 4th and maybe next years 2nd and 4th could be enough without giving up too much. The Giants save in pay and in public opinion and then they can take Sanders or even another QB. For the Panthers to drop down, it has to mean their top 3 picks are not there. Do they take TE-Warren if he drops in their lap at 8 (I do like that)? I believe they would love to drop back but again I don't think teams will pay a lot to move up unless they want a QB before the Saints (our only hope for a good value).  I'm not picking a player, just thinking of the draft in general and value. Reaching doesn't work and more and more teams are realizing that.
    • With the new DL, we should be better at edge by simple addition.   What player would have the biggest impact on the Panthers?  I still see the plan to trade back and take Emmanwori if we can find a trade partner.  Why, you ask?  S is a huge need and they have really only looked at 1 visits/meetings.  We will try to trade up for Princely in the second.  A WR in the third  (Bech or Noel).
