So picture yourself as JR and Hurney in front of the media immediately following a terrible season. You, as one of the two, announce that Fox will not return for a 10th season and that they (the front office) will begin the process of searching for his replacement immediately.

Several months go by and you, along with Mr. Richardson (or if you are Mr. Richardson, Mr. Hurney) announce the new head coach.....

Following the press conference, the new head coach begins to assemble a staff...

So my questions to you are:

A) Who is the next head coach?

and

Who does the next head coach bring with him?

Some rules to follow:

1- Be realistic! Please don't go madden on me and create your ultimate dream staff (a.k.a Belicheat, Andy Reid, etc..)

2- All resumes apply (College, Coordinators, ex-coaches)

3- Remember, you are not a fan, you are JR and Hurney, pick someone who fits their criteria

If I am JR, and I have a "wannabe Steelers" mentality.. I already have a deal in place with Bill Cowher to bring that sort of Steeler swagger to the Panthers. So with Bill Cowher as my new head coach, he will be looking for people who have the same sort of philosophy or that has previous ties to Bill Cowher. With Mike Singletary on the hotseat in San Fran, I'd assume he will be fired at the end of the season.. and let me tell you, he would be a great defensive coordinator and he runs the 3-4 defense in San Fran.

So with the defensive side of the ball in tow, I will look offensively.. in all actuality, Fox plays the same kind of offense that Cowher likes (smashmouth) football. Some people with former ties to Cowher would be, Mike Mularkey who is currently the OC for the Falcons, so I doubt we lure him.. the only logical choice with ties to Cowher would be Russ Grimm who is currently the offensive line coach of the Arizona Cardinals.. so this would not be a lateral move.

I don't want to get into all the position coaches as that would take too long to do the research.

In Summary:

HC: Bill Cowher

OC: Russ Grimm

DC: Mike Singletary

Because he also was offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings when they set all kinds of offensive records. He didn't forget all that he didn't have the players in Baltimore when all the talent was on the defensive side of the ball. With time outside of Football, he would likely be much better this time around.

JR will do the final interview and give the Ok, but Hurney is the one who's finding and presenting the candidates. And in the same vein, whoever gets the head coach job will go out and assemble his staff--this isn't Dallas.

The Panthers have had three coaches. Two of them were successful, one was not. The two that found success were both coordinators in their prior jobs. The one that was not had a record that made Cowher's look like Barry Switzer's. It's very likely that they'll go the coordinator route again.

Based on Hurney's latest comments and the makeup of the roster, I would be surprised if he didn't go for an OC this time. And he'll go for someone innovative, in an attempt to keep with Payton.

He won't choose an old guy, or someone who's been a head coach already. So if you were worried about Henning, you can relax now.

He won't choose Davidson either. Whoever gets the nod will know how to work with their QB, not against him.

So with all that said, my top predictions are:

Mike McCoy - Denver. Was the QB coach in Carolina and very well liked (Gannt would say he's the front-runner). His team is leading the league in passing, with Kyle Orton throwing the ball. That says it all right there.

Cam Cameron - Ravens. Loves the smashmouth game, manages his players well, and has gone from managing a rookie to winning with talent.

Jason Garrett - Cowboys. Probably the most like Sean Payton out there. This will only happen if Phillips is miraculously re-signed. Word is that he's the heir apparent in Dallas.

Tom Moore - Colts. Moore knows how to work with a franchise QB and he adapts well to personnel issues. He would work well with Clausen under center.

Mike Mularkey - Falcons. Is there a more average offensive line in the league? Mularkey gets a lot out of it, and has kept the offense moving when different elements are playing poorly.

Kyle Shanahan - Redskins. Looks to be every bit the offensive mind his father is. He brought the Texans offense to the top of the league when he was there.
