Seriously Steve Young?

I don't know what all the fuss is about... Young had great points. If we run 300 yards in every game, we have nothing to worry about. However, there is a reason we broke a record on Monday Night (a few actually). Granted we broke that record 2 times in 1 month.

However, if we are behind and need Jake, hopefully he'll start showing us his clutch playoff talent rather than the garbage these past few weeks.. And if its the latter, that was the point Young was making.

He has a valid point and a reason for bringing it up.

Edit: And the fan who threw the beer, that was a classless move.

The basic problem with what Young said was this. We had 14 completions in 20 passes. With the way we were running the ball, thats what we should have had. He said we should have been throwing the ball to Smith more, and in the middle of the field. But 9 of our 14 completions went to Smith. As far as the middle of the field, well we moved him around and used him well imo. Young was a great QB, but in this case, he was wrong. Our main problem is not how we use Smith, its that we don't use the others enough. But given our running success, thats understandable.

Case in point, on the Smitty TD throw, I was shouting at the screen that the RB was WIDE open for a moderate gain on the screen, and he had vision enough to go deep to Smitty. Anyone see that?

lol, I was doing the same thing but Jake put me in my place with the TD pass.

It wasn't just us either (I was seriously yelling at the TV) check out 2:30 of the NFL TA highlight video:

Stewart's open left flat, GIVE IT TO HIM! But no Jake Delhomme's going Steve Smith, left side. CAUGHT... FOR A TOUCHDOWN!!!

if anyone thinks steve young was being a hater yesterday then you gotta it all wrong my friend.this man clearly loves him some panthers especially steve smith,in which he said was THE BEST wr in the leauge.

he just threw in if we could reduce the ill advised ints,pa pass more to smith to get him in space, and pass more consistently we could be that giants caliber team.and he's right,we still have yet to put it all together.jake hopefully can get it together before the giants game.steve young basically was wanting to see us dominate some of the better teams in the league this year, but sees our passing game as a weakness sometimes.he hit it on the head if you ask me.

That is the point I was trying to make Monstercat. You hit the nail on the head. I know Jake can be inconsistent at times, but give me a break. Pundits crack me up. Two 400 yardgames and they are talking trade Brady and keep Cassell, and look at him now. Don't jump on anyone too quickly Steve, Jake orchestrates the game pretty well, and plays better in the clutch than most I think.

I saw it.

Why was he hating on us so much after the game?

Everything he said is true. We need to become more fluid in the passing game if we are going to win this division and make a playoff run.

I did disagree when he said that TD pass play to Smith wouldn't be effective in the playoffs. I'm not sure what he was talking about then. But most of what he said was on point.

Apparently defensive backs can teleport ten yards downfield to cover wide open receivers in the playoffs.

i think he meant the execution of that play wouldn't work, that was a perfect throw and catch...i couldn't see it happening again.but neither could i see the bucs giving up 300yds rushing

IDK, but I was embarrassed as a Panther fan and a North Carolinian when they began the post game show and some drunken redneck dickhead threw a cup at him on camera... You should've seen Emmitt's face, he went back to his playing days... lol

Who cares what he says, WE ARE #1 and WE'RE ON OUR WAY TO A DEEP RUN IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!

Why was he hating on us so much after the game? Talking about how we think we are a good team but they need more passing? Is that just the inherit QBness talking? If you run at will for 7+ YPC and for 300 yards, why on Earth would you throw the ball? Ask Peyton Manning if he would like to have a 300 yard running back tandem. Or Tom brady or anyone else. As a lifetime SF Bay Area resident, I've always had respect for Steve Young, but I wanted to bitch smack him after tonight. Anyone else get irked by this?

He kept saying over and over to get Smitty the ball in space. He has a huge respect for Steve and it was obvious when he talked about him getting all those yards the hard way. I agree with what he was saying.

There was alot of tension last night between Steve & Emmit both before & after the game. It seemed as if they both felt they had to forcibly talk about the issue they were discussing. And that tension came through how they were talking.

He had some accurate points but he just went on & on & on. Yes, we understand you think you could give Smitty a bigger career, you said it 3 times and inserted ego when you did.

But Steve also said he wouldn't be surprised at all if we end up the #1 seed and go to the super bowl. IMO he had himself vey confused last night.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
