Once again I will go on record that we must pass first to win this week

I guess better playcalling is the best way to sum this thread up...

Davidson showed he could adjust the playcalling to compensate for the quarterback in 2007 when we had someone starting differently every week. Seems to me he should be able to dial up a gameplan for Clausen against the Saints. Execution of course is another thing.

seems to me (as it was a while back and I'll be the 1st to admit my memory sucks) that our playcalling was held back due to different QBs starting... perhaps you can elaborate. I just remember that our playcalling never had the chance to expand due to the constant changes in QB...

and if he could do it in 2007, then I guess we'll be seeing it this week.. ;)

The playcalling has been terrible.

Did anyone catch the St. Louis/Washington game?

If you did, you would see what St. Louis does with Bradford. High % throw after high % throw. Hitch, playaction, flats. They base their scheme around their rookie rather than trying to force the rookie to execute an established scheme. The result was lots of short passes.

The Panthers approach to playcalling has been the opposite. They were calling run plays that played right into the defensive scheme and were consistently good for 1 or 2 yards per attempt. Then they continually stuck Clausen in 3rd and long situations which forced him to pass right into a nickel defense and pressure.

Again, perhaps with a veteran QB and veteran recieving corp you can allow your running game to carry you. With a rookie QB and a rookie receiving corp you need to establish the run. You don't establish the run by running in the NFL unfortunately, you do it by forcing the defense to respect the pass.

I think you are right, we did have to pare down the playbook and limit what we did. But even with that, our offense was more dybamic then this one. If Clausen has a command of our offense at this point then we should be able to help him maximize his potential. There is no excuse for the unimaginable plays we see that suffices for offense right now.

agree 100%.. there are ways to play to the strengths of this offense.. right now we are trying to force feed a run game that the defense is prepared for.. I fail to see any resemblance of competence at the moment..

At one point in the Cincy game, Rich Gannon commented how we were running the same plays.

No Otah and less than vanilla plays leads to disaster.

Either go max protect or spread the D out. Get the runners to the edges since one of your OL mainstays is not playing.

Do reverses and end arounds with Smitty if for nothing else than the element of surprise and get the D thinking.
