Armanti Edwards will likely get cut next year

The biggest problem with this thread is thinking that any of our receivers outside of maybe Smitty would be locked for any spot on the depth chart with a new coach. Our WRs have done nothing to warrant that kind of confidence.

If I came in as a new coach I'd keep all of our LBs, Smitty, our RBs, Jimmy Clausen, Gamble, Munnerlyn, Kalil, Greg Hardy and Sharrod Martin and tell everyone else to fug off. Gross and Otah can come too if Gross stops looking like a turnstile and Otahs big ass knee gets fixed up.

I also think when a new coach comes in he could drastically change the QB depth chart. IMO, it is a big assumption that a HC is gonna want to put his future in Carolina on Jimmy Clausen's shoulders. A lot of NFL mind passed on him. He has done anything in the NFL and might not. We could easly see a new starting QB brought in pending on the type system he wants to run.

Alright, follow my logic for a moment...

This theory is based on these assumptions

1.) Fox will be gone after this year

2.) AE doesn't see the field at all this year or until the last quarter of the season

3.) Our offense still leans toward the run (Hopefully, becomes more balanced in the air though)

This is why AE is likely to get cut next year. Next year, we will usher in a new era with a new coach. Therefore, the new coach will have no problem getting rid of players from Fox's era. At the WR position, the 1st 3 spots are more than likely locked. Smith, Lafell, Gettis...Therefore, we're left with the #4 WR spot and further down.

As a #4 WR, AE will probably get beaten out

There is two likely scenarios I see.

1.) Wallace Wright will beat out AE for #4

Wallace Wright has two advantages over AE right now. One, he is a better receiver right now and two, he can contribute to special teams as a special teams ace. More importantly, the special teams play will keep Wright ahead of AE.

2.) New FA or Draft pick will push AE too far down

It is possible that our new head coach could bring in a FA WR for competition. There are guys like James Jones from GB and Malcolm Floyd of SD(No VJax ) as #2s....but those are not likely. A Jacoby Jones pick-up could be possible seeing as he can help as a returner as well and is hungry for more playing time. Or we could try and draft a PR at WR.

Example/Proof

Dexter Jackson

AE's own ASU alum, AE could very well follow in his footsteps. Dexter Jackson was a very controversial pick...just like AE was. His speed boosted up his stock in the draft. Dexter Jackson was benched in 2008 over his fear of being hit. The very same fear you can see in AE. After the regime change over to Raheem Morris, the Bucs decided to move on as Dexter Jackson was beat out by Sammie Stroughter.

Stay?

AE will have a stronger possibility of staying if...let's say we trade Steve Smith. Or if we use him moreso like Vick (QB/Wildcat) instead of Joshua Cribbs (Returner/WR/Wildcat). That's the only way I feasibly see it though.

Conclusion

I'm pretty confident in this theory that AE will be gone next year and that pick will go down as one of the worst picks in our franchise history.

Agree with me! :yesnod:

Dude...no

That's very true. The funny thing is that how we do this year could shape the future of this franchise for the next decade or two. We end up with the first overall or a top 5 pick, does the new coach pick a Jake Locker or the guy from Arkansas (name escapes me right now)? Does Smitty request a trade when we're 3-13? Does Clausen rally us back into a near contender, thus saving Fox's job and causing us to stay the course for the next 3-4 years? This season, unlike others in my recent memory will impact what happens with us for a long time I think, and things could go in so many different directions.

AE isn't going anywhere. The dude hasn't even seen the field yet, how can anyone assume he'll be gone next year? I think he should play on Sunday vs the 30th ranked rush defense in New Orleans.

Is there any other team in the league that consistantly carries 3 wr's on gameday? It won't be long until we see AE.

Ever consider that the future coach is already committed and might have "whispered" who he might want in the draft? AE being drafted might have been directed by JR as a precursor to the future of this team.

My gut instinct tells me that the future coach (already committed to JR) has been whispering some input this year to better prepare for next. Might have had some input into the cuts to make room for more rookies to gain experience this year. Time will tell - Like 1st week of Jan 2011.

If you think Wright and his special teams ability comes before offensive production, you are wrong. What you might see is Smith requesting and getting traded as early as next month--I said might. If we are 0-5 at the break and Minnesota, for example, offers a first rounder for Smitty, how do you not take it? If he stays, he is 32 and his value is drops to a 3rd rounder if you decide to move him in the off season. Punching teammates? Flag football IR? Yelling at the QBs on the sideline? JR might be fed up with the little prick.

Smitty makes a good salary and we could shop for and sign one of the best in the league next year. We would have 2 first rounders and 2 3rd rounders.

Now, bring in a veteran but younger #1 WR-0r- Could Gettis be that good by the end of the year? Could Edwards? You don't know, but suggesting that Edwards, Gettis, and Lafell dress next year, in additition to a #1, is not far fetched.

Wasn't Irvin a 3rd rounder? He might be on the PS. Ellison was a third rounder, Shelton was a second rounder. Bruce Nelson (injury), Rashard Anderson was a first rounder (drugs or something). Edwards is a project--like Jarrett, with more speed and versatility. However, if Fox is gone, Edwards could get cut. Not impossible.

I'm not a huge fan of Edwards because of where we drafted him, but I also have realistic expectations for a guy learning a new position at the NFL level. But even I can assure you that AE IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE. He will be on the team next year NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. No team cuts young talent at a position they are weak at. He could develop into a quality #2 or he could be a bust. We won't know anything until next year or the year after. GIVE THE KID SOME TIME TO LEARN.

if hurney has anything to say about it (and he probably will) edwards will still be around.

this morning hurney said that much of edwards problems ws that he lost his legs towards the end of the offseason because he had never had to do so much running in his life.

it wasn't the lack of talent that is keeping him back, it's the lack of endurance which will probably bi fixed as he gets more used to playing a position that requires a lot of it. plus the conditioning program will help with his endurance as well (providing that there isn't a lockout).

supposedly he has gotten his legs back and is back at it impressing everyone like he was early on. still...i would be surprised to see him active much at all this year. he wasn't drafted to make an impact this year. he was drafted to be an impact player next year and beyond. thats why they call him a project.
