Armanti Edwards will likely get cut next year

Can't see it happening at all.

Edwards isn't Dexter Jackson.

And honestly, if a new coach decides to "houseclean", he could just as easily let go of an older player like Steve Smith.

(hate saying that, but it's true)

Yeah, that's why I added the part about Steve Smith and I hate the idea too.

I just don't see how AE can see the field unless the new coach really decide to dedicate to AE in the long run.

Edwards and Dexter Jackson aren't really that different. Both suck as returners and both aren't good enough wide receivers to warrant a spot on the team from where they were drafted. Edwards does has the added dimension of being a quarterback which is why I suggested we use him more like Vick and throw some WR plays in rather than try to force him as a PR.

Fox likely wasn't the one who wanted to draft Edwards.

He has more talent than lost of guys in this league. He is a rookie. You shouldn't expect much from this year. Year 2 I expect him to play and be good.

While I don't expect AE to be at Pro-Bowl level or anything, I do expect him to contribute. Even as a project player, he should be able to help us out with something. He will probably get some playing time later on during the year if we're out of the playoff picture.

The question I want to bring up is how is AE going to see the field next year?

This. Fox's last contribution to this team is to take this one on the chin and try to get guys some playing time. The FO had no expectations of reaching the post season this year.

How many top 3 round draft picks have we ever cut before at least year 3. I can't think of many if at all. Especially in the last 6 drafts.

All those guys were under Fox. A new coach will not have to hold that same type of loyalty. Two 3rd Round DTs were cut though...

Also, I see some bringing up DJ. DJ was lucky enough to have Fox, a guy with stubborn loyalty. Even though, we're wondering why DJ is still on the team now.

i swear it was 2-3 weeks ago that people were going on and on about how we wont be seeing much of AE for a year or two now he's getting cut? what about the word "project" dont you understand? hell edwards could come back and be the returner later this season for all you know. it was one crappy game as a returner in the PRESEASON. he's capable of doing too much on this team for them to cut after one season.

What can he do? Explain that to me

Didn't read what you wrote. There is no possible logic to support the claim. Kinda of like trying to convince me that the sky is made of Jell-O. not happening.

Edwards hasn't performed but according to many sources he is getting better everyday and I think maybe next year or a few years down the line he could prove to be something. Hes also just a rookie who didn't even play WR in college, for comparisons sake lets look at some star WRs who played WR in college and how they did their rookie year...

Vincent Jackson 8 games 3 receptions 59 yards (he was a 2nd round pick)

Wes Welker didn't catch a pass his first two years but he was a good return man, his third year and first year in the offense he played 16 games and caught 29 passes for 434 yards

Robert Meahcem 14 games 12 receptions 289 yards (first round pick)

Brandon Marshall 15 games 20 receptions 209 yards

Donald Driver 6 games 3 receptions 31 yards (caught a mere 37 balls his first 3 years in the league)

Chad Johnson 12 games 28 receptions 329 yards

Its common for rookie WRs to struggle, but as long as our guys have good worth ethic hopefully htey will turn into something next year or the year after.

While I agree with the example you posed, I wouldn't read too much into the comments about how much better AE is looking now. Hopefully, we will get to see it sooner or later.

I understand that WRs usually take 3 years to develop. I just think AE will not fit into the gameplan.

Steve Smith as #1

Brandon Lafell/David Gettis as #2/#3.

I don't see AE beating out those two as receivers. Especially now as they are getting prime in-game experience. Something those rookie receivers got in your examples.

As a #4 receiver, Armanti will have to beat out a guy like Wallace Wright who vastly improved himself as a receiver AND offers special team ability. And this is not including the possibility of us picking up a FA receiver or something

So how does he see the field?

Also, if AE stays inactive in year 2 like he is now. Then he pretty much becomes the new Dwayne Jarrett. (Why is he on the time?)

This is what Raheem Morris said about Dexter Jackson

Some of it had to do with other people coming along, with other people emerging, but it was really just time to go in another direction,'' Bucs coach Raheem Morris said.

The Bucs couldn't envision a scenario where Jackson made the team as either a return man or a receiver, despite the fact he'd made strides in both areas this year.

"We wanted to look at him as a slot receiver and as one of our speed guys, somebody who can take the top off,'' Morris said. "But he didn't fit the whole package of where we wanted to go, and we found some other people that we like better.''

Note: This is just my theory, but definitely see AE fitting this type of scenario

Unless Hurney/JR will FORCE that kind of pull over a new head coach to keep AE...then who knows

First off, you're speculating on sooo many fronts. Your arguments don't hold water, at all.

While it does take time for a WR to develop at the pro level, there's something more at work here behind his not being activated. In the pre-season, Armanti led the team in receptions and showed a lot of spark on the field. He didn't do very well at handling punts the first couple of games, but showed a bit of improvement by the last game.

But he hasn't been activated yet and we've had three lousy, lousy games. Why? Jarrett is a bust and pretty much gone. LaFell and Gettis has shown some good catches, but let's face it, nothing to start calling people up and tell them to turn their TVs to the game yet.

Either Edwards will see the field this week or the team is keeping him in the classroom for something different than what we think. WR play so far has been ho hum to poor, but quarterbacking has been even worse.

Like I said, he'll either hit the field this week, or expect to see him QBing by mid-season.

I am too lazy to look it up, but I think that there have been a few that we have cut ties with pretty quickly.

Shelton

Nelson

Irvin

And had we been any good at finding WR's you could add Jarrett to this list.

Well if he starts playing soon, then you can just ignore this thread because one of my assumptions will be wrong. (The one about AE not playing this season.)

Also, he doesn't necessarily have to QB much but if we use him like Philly used Vick...then I can see him staying too.
