NFL Coaching Trees

It's interesting to really look at the entire coaching tree and compare coaching from back in the merger days with today. It's very different and sometimes I wonder why. I look back to when Shula broke the all time Head Coaching wins mark and ended up with 347. I wondered who would be the next coach to move up the ranks. It's just no longer a career position. Not even close. I kinda miss it.

He's probably worth a look.

I am getting my hopes up towards an offensive guru who can also call the shots on offense, otherwise we'd have to find a good offensive coordinator as well.

I would not get my hopes up..JR goes for DC but maybe he will change and go with a offensive guy this year.

whos your favorite candidates right now?

Mike Zimmer, Bengals DC (same guy as last year).

I could live with Harbaugh, but I'm not sure he fits the Panthers MO. Only once have they interviewed an offensive coach (Spurrier). For that matter, he might be the only college coach they've given consideration. Can't think of any others offhand.

I generally want nothing to do with retreads like Cowher and Gruden.

Also not a fan of Weis as more than an OC, plus his health is suddenly a concern. And honestly, Bill Belichick's "coaching tree" has had Dutch Elm disease (Eric Mangini, Romeo Crennel, Weis at Notre Dame, jury's still out on McDaniels in Denver).

One thing to consider about Zimmer is he's been on some decent pro staffs, and I think he could put together a decent staff of assistants.

Wouldn't surprise me if he brought Ken Zampese (son of the architect of the great Cowboy offenses of the 90s, current Bengals QB coach and a reported candidate for the Panthers OC job that eventually went to Jeff Davidson) as his offensive coordinator.

He's actually on a staff that includes a couple of former Panthers coaches (Chip Morton, strength and conditioning; and Darrin Simmons, special teams) but I don't know that he'd want to bring them back.

Yeah but what about his age Zimmer is 54 now.I would think they want a younger guy

I am still a fan of getting an offensive minded coach in here. I know that JR probably won't do that however.

The league has changed, and I can't see our division going more toward a 3 yards and a cloud of dust in the next 6-8 years...so we will need to score some points.

    • Ok but is the alternative? He is not going to sign for a lesser contract, so then do you release him? We did that with Burns... see how that is working out. You can save the cap but you still need to replace the player. You can argue that we should have be preparing to replace Horn when his deal came up but we dealt those picks to get a QB.  Im curious to know how you would have handled it differently..
    • Perhaps you are correct but it has been a long time since the Panthers had a WR core that scared anyone and this could be part of the problem.  They finally found someone with Moore and the fans complained nonstop that he wasn't a true number 1 and perhaps the front office agreed and why he was traded.  If Warren is there at number 8, that's going to be the pick.
