Grade The Panthers: Bengals Game

Skew

QB: D+ (better than Moore, but that's not saying much; fumble)

RB: C (still blame Davidson and OL for poor performance; fumble)

WR: C+ (improvement over last week)

OL: F (these guy can't pass block or run block consistantly)

DL: C+ (better pressure for 4 quarters than last week)

LB: B (as Kurb said to me during the game, you can build a team around Beason)

DB: B+ (much improvement over last week with the INTs and coverage)

ST: B (again, better than last week; no turnovers, but no big plays either)

Coaching: D- (do I really need to make a comment?)

Overall: D-

only one I disagree with is LB and DB, I believe DB should be a B- and LB should be a C (LB could not get off blocks on the screen passes)

QB - C- (Did ok, considering what he had to work with. At no moment did I slap my face and say WTF ARE YOU DOING like when Moore was in there the past two games)

RBs - C+ (Deangelo did better than the previous two games, Stewart did not.)

WRs - C (Gettis played relatively well, Lafell had 1 nice catch, but shoulda made the catch in the end zone. Smitty was Smitty when Jimmy finally started throwing him the ball)

OL - F- (Seriously Kalil, those two botched snaps were all on him....the first was up in Jimmy's chest instead of his hands, the second barely made it to Jimmy's fingertips. Blocking was terrible overall too)

DL - B- (Yay, a DLman got a sack. Decent pressure most of the night, good run defense early in the game. Broke down though.)

LBs - C+ (Anderson F'd up big on Benson's TD reception. Overall not great by the LB corps)

DBs - B (Did pretty decently against 2 elite (but aging) WRs. Had about 2 or 3 fewer INTs than they should have...)

Special Teams - B (Cosby couldn't return for poo against them, and Goodson did ok overall)

Coaching - F- (I almost want to take away the minus because they actually looked better in the second half than first, but then I remember there was only like 15 rushes in the game total and the gameplanning in general seemed to suck)

Overall - D (Overall offense looked like it has the ability to grow, but not until the O-line gets their poo straight. Maybe it's the lack of Otah, I dunno. Defense looked pretty good for the most part, considering the field position they were constantly dealing with).

    • There's some big assumptions in here - first, I think Canales HAS helped Bryce a poo ton. To pretend he hasn't is asinine. Has he fixed him?  I mean, the dude looks like he could perhaps be a backup or low-end starter now, whereas he looked like he didn't belong in the NFL a year ago. You're talking about a coach that brought one of the worst NFL QBs of all time to a point where he may actually be a low-end starter. That IS impressive. Second, the bolded. Come on - given the offense, the dude is far from "trending towards bust." He definitely needs work but he's shown an impressive ability to get open. He's contributing to an anemic offense. The dude is our leading receiver (though he'll be #2 in yardage by end of season by a little, as Thielen does better per game).  As to his coaching, he had this team competing and believing against 3 of the better teams in the NFL, despite the lack of talent, and despite our QB situation.  Yes, things fell apart vs DAL, and he was outcoached. But that will happen with young coaches IMO.  I don't think it indicates he cant' be better. The idea of "pulling off the bandage" is ridiculous. Who would want to coach here if we fired this guy after one season?
    • Whatever they are in totality the cowboys are beat up all to hell on both sides of the ball and even that was too much for lil Bryce to overcome.  Bryce defenders have to hype up every other team and trash every other part of the panthers just because of the situation they’ve put themselves in.
    • JB had a first round grade in the eyes of a lot scouts based on HIS TALENT LEVEL. If not for the injury he would have gone higher in the draft, possibly between the middle and the end of round 1. To get him just before the 50th pick is a steal. He'd be on a 4 year deal. You can't even renegotiate until the end of the season 3. You're basically paying him nothing for 3 seasons. I don't buy into all back are interchangeable. No they're not. You have average backs, good backs, then your great-exceptional backs. The latter category doesn't grow on trees. If a back is special it pays to keep them. The key is knowing the difference between the first two categories and the third one.
