Early Sunday thoughts

You come here for sports, not for weather.

That said, it's about to rain.

According to the Weather Underground (wunderground.com, I like it better, plus, it sounds subversive), there's a 90 percent chance of precipitation by kickoff.

There's a temptation to suggest this favors the grind-it-out Panthers, who would run every down if they could. But that would be underestimating the Bengals, who have allowed Cedric Benson a nice Act II to his career. Benson, who looked like a bust in Chicago, has nine 100-yard games in 25 Bengals starts.

As much attention as is paid to the Bengals passing game (and QB Carson Palmer might be one of the more underrated passers in the league), Benson's the tone-setter.

But it's getting ready to rain. So enough about that fancy throwing of the football. Today sets up for the run.

-- One guy who probably won't get any run today is rookie WR Armanti Edwards. Barring an unexpected outbreak of food poisioning at the team hotel or some such, Edwards figures to be inactive again. He's still learning, and may not do much this year.

Don't confuse that with a lack of confidence. It's just that both David Gettis and Brandon LaFell have shown more.

Gettis in particular has become a favorite of the coaching staff and front office for one reason -- he can run.

We'll check in once we get to the stadium with inactives and such. ... But bring your poncho.
