theory on Smitty

Smitty is fast

Smitty is elusive

Smitty makes himself available

Smitty should be thrown the ball even coverage is pretty good

Smitty makes the average passer/pass look great

Is Steve so dynamic and so proficient in his unique skill set that it is impossible to remain consistent as a passer with he and the other receivers simultaneously?

In other words, Is it mentally more difficult to run an offense with a huge gap in talent that we have always had here at #2 receiver?

Just wondering what your thoughts are.....

A caller on Packman suggested today that perhaps the guys we've brought in over the years were very capable of being a great #2, especially the guys we have right now. But, he suggested that from watching the games that our routes and passing scheme is so simple that it's not conducive to those guys developing and playing up to their potential. He talked about how the Colts routes look totally different and it seems like it doesn't matter who they plug in at WR, there guys are gonna put up numbers.

That's not hard to imagine with who they have at QB, but you have to believe that the scheme itself has something to do with it.

With Smitty, I don't care if you told him to run a streak every play the whole game, if you throw it to him running that streak every play, he's gonna catch a lot of them and make plays after he does so. He's going to make plays other guys don't on a regular basis.

And I agree with Beaux, it should be easier for another guy to emerge with Smitty lining up on the other side. But, like i said, I think our passing system is a hindrance to developing any WR we've brought in.

That would explain why so many of our failures at the #2 WR spot have gone on to enormous success after we let go of them.

Calling out the coaches on this one...

its the scheme. Henning's passing schemes were much, MUCH better than Davidson's. It's like Henning was an actual coach, and to Davidson, passing the ball is just a hobby he sometimes takes up. Either that or a hated chore that he resents having to do at all.

He cares about as much about passing as I do about hearing about my wife's job! I'm there when she's talking...but I'm not really paying attention...

I'm not buying it. Smith's dominance should make it that much easier for another receiver to step up as a clear No. 2.

I don't think you can look at any No. 1 receiver in the league and say that they are so talented that they made it difficult for the quarterback to consistently hit the other receivers.

i agree. a dominant 1 frees the other guys. i was more along the lines of timing does the qb feel less comfortable with 2 and 3 after getting up to speed with 1? What recognition an adjustment must take place when going through progressions after a snap to accommodate the pluses and minuses for each target?

of course this is a question for any team
