Just saw the worst HS football game of my life...

lightsout

So, I'm in Madison county. I figured, "It's Friday, let's go to a local HS football game." So I make the 10 minute trip to Madison High School for the conference opener against Polk County. Let me break down the teams so you understand.

Polk County

Maybe 25-30 man roster

Good deal of speed. Some size, but not a lot.

Good game plan, execution wasn't great, but athleticism made up for it.

A defense that was fundamentally sound, but soft as hell. Like a rabbit pissing on a bale of cotton when they hit.

Madison High

-20 man roster, at the most.

-No size.

-Some speed (DBs and their RB, mostly).

-No semblance of a game plan. I-formation to spread, to single back, back to I, etc.

-Terrible play calling. Reminds me of the Panthers. Opening drive, went 60 yards, in the I-formation, running the football for a TD. Then, stopped running.

-Defense was a 5-3 with two stand-up defensive ends. It was like there was no "scheme" for them. They blitzed their 3 LBs up the middle nearly every play. Not a bad idea, if you're ends are containing outside. They weren't, and the coaches never corrected it. Got torched on the ground on their first series. 1 play, 50 yards, TD.

-So soft when they hit that it was laughable.

Left in the 3rd quarter, Polk 29 Madison 8. But it was worse than that.

If either of these teams had to play a GOOD team, they'd get killed. Just had to get all this out and vent the frustration I had after watching a badly coached game and a badly executed game. Feel free to leave pie if you took the time to read that.

The worst I ever say was the High School I work at. We were winning at halftime 26-24.

We ended up losing 62-26. It was the single worst defensive performance I have ever seen.

The next Monday the principal comes on the announcements and says, "In 33 years of education, I have never been whooped that bad."

JESUS! That was a meltdown. But at James Kenan high school tonight, JK was beating Union High 23-0 at halftime. Lost 28-23. Union won 2 games all last year. They're now 4-1. JK won the 1A state title in 2007 and are traditionally very strong. Down year last year, but this year was supposed to be the year they bounce back. Guess not after, now, losing 3 straight.

For a principle to come on and say that is pretty bad though. A lot of times they try to reassure the coach and players. Guess not in this case. lol

No HS is worse than mine.

Year in and year out the Soccer team both girls and boys outscore the football team.

So yea.

A team that used to be in the conference my HS was in had a 70 something game losing streak. Rick Reilly wrote about em on one of his SI back page stories, and when they finally broke the streak it got mentioned in SI and USA Today.

I know Dixon HS had a pretty long losing streak. Spanned over like, 5 years I think. May have been them, who knows? Unless you're not in NC at all, in which case, obviously it's not.

Hunt is now 5-1. 52 - 14 over CB Aycock tonight.

I bitched about our qb all last year. I take it all back. The dad must have hired someone, cause dayum. Hunt finally has a passing game. And they can run the ball. The defense just needs to step up sometimes. They would be 6 - 0 except for a stupid fumble two games ago. It's a young team, too. The qb is only a jr.

When I say passing game, I mean holy poo the boy has an arm and is accurate. At least one td pass was for at least 40 yards, if not more.

If Hunt continues to improve, I see us making the playoffs. We made it to the state championship against Concord back in 03/04 with just a running game and defense.

    • According to multiple players and staffers in the locker room, some players were asking why Eberflus didn’t call a timeout. Other players got going, too. “Guys were furious,” a staff member said. “It was an accumulation of this season.” “The locker room was ugly,” another staffer said. “There was a lot of yelling.” Said the first player: “We felt as players it’s been too many instances where we fought our way back into games to lose because of bad time management and decision-making.” Multiple sources added that the emotions were so high between the players and their head coach that Eberflus left the locker room immediately after his speech and the exchange with players. There was nothing left to say. It was a moment for this Bears team that would inevitably force chairman George McCaskey into something the franchise had never done before. By Friday morning, Eberflus was out — but not before the team decided to have him address the media over Zoom just after 9 a.m. Two hours later, he was gone. The Bears made it official by sharing statements from general manager Ryan Poles and president/CEO Kevin Warren.
    • You take all this stuff too personally.  Learn to detach. Lol or don't. It's up to you. People don't have the same appreciation or longing for him you seem to have. For me, I just don't understand it. Basically a footnote in Panthers history. Go ahead if you feel he needs it or you need it, but most apparently just don't know why it's such a big deal. Comparing him to guys like kuechly or cam is kind of weak. Those guys made a huge impact on the franchise. Wilks was just a guy we had as a DC a couple times and got him to be an interim. Mildly interesting, but not much more than that as time goes on.
    • @adamjahns   In Detroit, Bears players finally had enough. The locker room was an ugly scene. Players yelled back at their head coach — and he left. The inside story on the final days of Matt Eberflus and where he lost his team.  https://x.com/adamjahns/status/1862848299981541516
