Replace, or rethink?

In order for a defense to be successful, you MUST have one of two components. Clearly it would be nice to have both, but it is mandatory to have at least one.

a) A nasty pass rush, which pressures the quarterback, and allows your secondary to be less-than-stellar. As they do not have to cover as long.

OR

B) A nasty secondary, which can cover like a blanket, which allows your pass rush more time to get to the quarterback.

This is not an argument of which one is better, but simply that one or the other is a MANDATORY component of a solid defense.

Clearly, our scheme has not asked our corners to cover on an island. We tend to play a soft zone, whereas neither the coverage is tight, nor the pass rush nasty. Why not take a look at buying a shutdown corner such as Asomugha (he's bad@ss), and playing more man in the secondary, thereby sending more bodies toward the quarterback???

If Peppers is gone, and with no Lucas...we should have the money to pay Asomugha. He, Gamble, Harris, and Godfrey sounds quite nasty to me. Pair that with an incredibly athletic group of linebackers, and the back 7 is one of the best in the league.

I prefer a pass-rush, but the Redkins of the past few years have shown that a good secondary can create opportunities for your average-at-best defensive line.

Your thoughts?! And again, this is not to argue which is preferred. Simply to talk wbout the possibilities, with money to burn.

With today's talent level and schemes you need both but lean to the secondary being better.

But look at Phily. The rush is not that great, but with the coverage being as it is makes it seem like the rush is even faster.

But think about this. And yes its water under the bridge but all the Panthers had to do was double team Fitz. That could have easily altered the game.

The rethink HAS to be a part of the coaches DNA.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
