In the past 10 years.....how many drafted WRs were actually #2 caliber there rookie year. The safe bet is that they aren't going to be that this year.

but it doesn't matter. We are just playing a waiting game anyway. 14 more Fox games to go. Watching the young guys grow is what we have to look forward to.

this I do agree with.. there is no such thing as "trying to win this year" and "letting rookies grow for a year through experience".. the 2 are like oil and water..

(referring back to what Hurney stated in that interview...)

Since when is it such a bad thing for an NFL franchise to develop their own players, instead of trading away draft picks for FA's? Does anybody here really believe that Vincent Jackson would have won this team a Superbowl this season, and would anything less than a Superbowl victory justify what they would have to give up to get a WR of that calibre?

People can bitch and moan about this all they want, but no trade is gonna make us world champs this year, and if we're gonna have to wait a year or two for it to happen, then why not do it with our own draft picks?

I agree with this now.. because nothing was ever done and now we are stuck. V Jackson won't be worth it long term.. but I think he is a bad example to give.. to acquire him means we are jumping to fill a void now, when we should have got better prospects earlier..

but this is irrelevant to the offseason.. we could have brought in a guy who took over Smitty's spot, let Smitty play #2 or #1b (whatever works for people), and let the rookies develop...

developing players is great.. you don't have to have them as your #2 receiver to do that...

Even if they would have spent big money on a WR this offseason, the Panthers still wouldn't be any closer to winning a Superbowl than they are now. Also, I used Vincent Jackson, because he is about the only WR they could have aquired, before or after the season, that would have even come close to getting us to a Superbowl or helping this team win past this season.

And BTW, what makes everybody so sure that Gettis and LaFell can't help us this year? Rookie WR's have been productive before and our new WR's coach has a pretty good reputation for getting rookie WR's to a high level pretty quickly.

Anyway, the best WR in the world can't sack a QB, cause turnovers, break big runs, or make the Panthers starting QB play like Tom Brady. It takes all phases to become a championship NFL football team.

How so?

Its not as if where throwing tons rookies out there. Clausen, Gettis, and Lafell are the only rookies that have/going to start. We can still try to win this year.

Hurny said on WFNZ he wanted to go with Young=rookie recievers to

grow with the young QBs. HaHaHA

Yeah, Hurney got the 'young' part right.

...being able to get open/separation and being able to actually, you know, catch the ball, well, he fell a little short of the mark there.

It was interesting on NFL Radio this afternoon, basically said the Panthers owner/management have basically thrown this season away.

Sure would have been nice to get a price break on my tickets, for a season that, if true, has been thrown away.

To think any decision will bring a Superbowl, even with a talented team, is one I can't subscribe with anyone.. It is entirely too hard to win a SB to put those expectations on any team..

You have Colts, Texans, Ravens, Bengals, Patriots, Packers, Saints, Vikings, and fill in whoever I left out that has that potential..

Every team can make it.. The 1st few names people might criticize would be Texans, Ravens, Bengals, and Vikings.. but ask their fans what they expect..

every fan is looking forward to a SB appearance.. but the truth is many really good teams won't make it..

So I wouldn't expect any move to be SB or bust..

What I do expect is that our Run game would open up with another threat at receiver, all we can do is run.. mainly because Smitty gets swarmed- you MUST have 2 threats out there on the field at receiver.. you're pass protection takes a beating because defenses can pin their ears back.. this also goes back to playcalling, but both are a reason...

so no, a receiver can't do the things you mentioned (sacks, etc).. but, IMO, it plays a HUGE role in your examples being magnified because like you mentioned, it takes all phases to build a championship team.. just like one phase will have a major affect on all other phases...

I hope like hell Gettis and LaFell do step up in a big way.. maybe the WR coach has been a huge key.. but our draft picks at the WR position has been nothing less than horrific...

as for available FAs, there were other possibilities, but they hinge on certain aspects some may find more important than others... as for now, we NEED LaFell and Gettis to step up and spend an early pick on talent this offseason (through the draft... I don't think there are any true #1's coming into FA this next offseason, and I'm tired of watching the FO whiff at FA WRs who they hope just needed a change of scenery..)

Competitive would be nice...just competitive.

I'm sure you heard what the Bucs defenders said after this last game and we might as well get used to it because we are going to hear it for the next 14 games.

There is no excuse for that exhibition Sunday, or the Sunday before that, not one.

I'll give college players every break in the world, but, not pro players and coaches.

They get paid a lot of money and we pay a lot of money to see them.

Same bitch from me, different day...I just really pissed off to now be probably the 2nd worst team in the league and that's giving short shrift to the bottom dwellers.

Where is it written in stone that the Panthers can't be competitive this year with the players they have? Two games does not define a season, and there is absolutely no reason to believe that Gettis and LaFell can't make plays this year.

I'm actually much more worried about our defense and their inability to gets sacks and hurries than I am about our WR's, but the last time I checked, none of you were crying about the Panthers not going after a big time FA DE during the preseason.

Rookie QBs throwing to rookie WRs normally doesn't win you lots of games.

Defensively all we need to do is bench Godfrey and start Pugh at whichever spot he is better at and have Martin at the other spot
