Looking back-- Mike Mayock evaluates Jimmy Clausen before the draft

Hell, all 32 teams passed up Tom Brady through 5 rounds, so even the pros don't always get it right, even with 10 times as much information that any fan could ever hope to have access to.

BTW, in a different draft, Clausen could have easily been picked in the top 5. I think a lot of teams are kind of scared to commit to a top 5 QB nowadays though, because it's just such a massive risk with the guaranteed money these kids are getting. If a team gets it wrong, it ruins the teams' chances for years and coaches lose their jobs.

i'm starting to get pumped up for the first time all season. i'm not expecting a win. i'm just getting more excited about jimmy being our QB.

he could be the one we've been dreaming of.

loving that kool aid by the way. it's pretty refreshing.

I'm starting to feel the same way, and I was on the matt moore bandwagon back in 07 (I'm still not off, I still heart the guy).

It's just exciting thinking about the possibilities of having a good Quarterback for once in our Franchise's history.

Mayock talked about Clausen on NFL Network's "Playbook" tonight..

said "his physical skill set is every bit as good as Mark Sanchez.. but he's got a bigger arm than Sanchez, he's just as athletic, he's ready to play.. the whole rap on Clausen was that he was an entitled kid who wouldn't work hard.. but let me tell you what, I believe he grew up at the end of his career at Notre Dame, he works hard, he understands the X's and O's of the game of football and he's a gym rat.."

Well, I kind of had the same thoughts about Bradford, and I would add that I never saw him throw the long ball at all at Oklahoma. I will always go with a pro style QB first anyway. These spread offenses are making it really hard to evaluate some of these guys and it has produced a lot of busts because even the experts tend to fall in love with the video game-like numbers sometimes.

Anyway, I believe Jimmy Clausen will be a good one. He still has a lot to learn about dealing with NFL defenses, but he has all the basic skills and the leadership ability, IMO.

See this is why i'm just debating with you and ignoring other people. I remember we used to have pretty good talks about football.

On to the point. Yeah, pro style QBs first always. These spread guys are just ruining the talent at QB for the NFL IMO.

He'll be good. Worth a 1st rounder i think. A solid 20/10 TD/INT QB which for the offense the Panthers run would be VERY sufficient.
