Two-back passing sets

Someone with better football knowledge help me understand this---on third downs when we run the pro set with two backs flanking the QB in the shotgun, Fiametta is always one of them. It seems to me that most of the time they don't keep him in to block and he flares out to the flats. He can't catch a cold and he's slow as Christmas. If you're going to utilize two backs as receivers (no doubt due to the absence of any actual receivers other than Smith), why would you not use some combination of Williams, Stewart and Goodson, all of whom are capable receivers and two of whom (Williams and Stewart) are big and strong enough to stay in and block/chip if you need them to? You'd keep at least one linebacker more honest in having to account for them, because they essentially play off Fiametta when there's more than 5 yards to go.

Our offense is predicated on using play action in order to pass the ball. By using a pro set, the defense has to play the pass and run. If we put 2 half backs in there, they would know we are going to pass which would telgraph the play.

As least I am guessing that is the thinking.

I am not sure I would agree with it though. I would like to see Goodson and perhaps Williams in on third down and medium or long. I would like us to throw more instead of run to confuse the defense. But then again I would like to throw more on first and second down and be less predictable. My beef with our offense is that if we don't get a first down on first or second down, we only have 1 shot to get it in the air. And as others have pointed out, it usually takes a big play to get it instead of some offenses which always seem to have 2 or 3 options wide open on every play. Especially against us.

With all that said in order to help Clausen we will run all day regardless of the fact that they will stop us on most downs and it will put Clausen at a disadvantage having to go 3 and long too often. BUt like others I am tired of the offense and waiting for a change.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
