Cowher to KC in 2010?

File this one under a Chiefs area to watch next season.

CBS analyst Boomer Esiason said on his WFAN-NY radio show this week that he wouldn’t be surprised if Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli hired Bill Cowher to coach the team in 2010.

This is intriguing on any number of levels.

For starters, Esiason works with Cowher and is familiar with his thinking.

Then there is the matter of Esiason also saying that Cowher and Pioli are close friends.

Also, Cowher served as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator from 1989 to 1991, so he is familiar with the city.

And Pioli appears to have been stymied so far in his search for Kansas City’s next head coach. Sources around the league insist that Pioli had interest in bringing along Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as his head coach, but the Denver Broncos hired him.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz also is thought to appeal to Pioli, but the indications are that he isn’t willing to leave the school.

And when Pioli stepped to the podium for his introductory press conference Wednesday, he said he would sit down and speak with Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, whom Pioli knows, likes and respects.

Edwards could be the holdover, the bridge to the next head coach, partly because other coaches weren’t available, partly because Pioli likes him and partly because Edwards already has one year left on his contract that’s scheduled to expire after next season.

But the coaching watch of 2010 already has almost as much intrigue as the ongoing coaching watch of 2009.

If so and KC keeps Herm. I guess We might lose out on Cowher and Herm. But I think Cowher is really holding out for Carolina.

yea...lets hold out for a coach who it took 14 years to win a super bowl...Cowhers is so overrated. This is silly talk. Let KC have him.

whatever. cowher won one SB in that many years. fox has had 7 yrs and only appeared in the playoffs and 1 SB. Who wouldn't rather have that win over the appearances.

n Cowher’s 15 seasons, the Steelers captured eight division titles, earned ten postseason playoff berths, played in 21 playoff games, advanced to six AFC Championship games and made two Super Bowl appearances. He is one of only six coaches in NFL history to claim at least seven division titles. It has become an article of faith among NFL pundits that the Steelers do not have a bad team two years in a row – they have never lost 10 or more games in consecutive years since the 1970 NFL merger. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers had the best record of any team in the National Football League since Cowher was hired as head coach.

he clearly knows what he is doing.

    • I couldn't stay up past regulation.   Did the ref's factor in UGA's victory?   No penalties against GT until the 4th quarter and then a very suspect PI call (that replay couldn't even point out) to give UGA 6 attempts at a touchdown from inside the 10 followed by 3 more penalties against GT on the following drives.

    • I mean he is the best TE. He's leading all TEs in receptions and yards. While doing it with bad QBs.
