So...If Jimmy sucks....then what?

"However, we have all stated that Clausen has the potential to be better than any QB we've had. Especially this season. But potential does nothing on the bench."

And all I'm saying is he also has the potential to be the next David Carr... that's all I'm saying... and why is that so difficult to understand and why doesn't anyone want to think, "What next?"

how is no one thinking "what next"? people have given ideas on what they think would happen. i said tony pike would be up. beyond that, who cares the season would be sunk and we'll be stuck with a new coahcing staff and a potential first pick overall in the next draft. what's the big deal there? what were we supposed to do? go running around screaming "OMG the sky might fall on us!!!!!!!" lol. find something better to do with your time. or not. i don't care.

what's the point on dwelling on that anyway? you like torturing yourself with the possible horrible consequences of everyone's actions?

of course he could be the next david carr. i'll admit that if you can admit he's just as likely to become the next drew brees. personally i don't see either one happening but i'm not going to stress about the possibility of either one happening.

I feel the same as you- no expectations either way. But I simply refer to the OP: "So...If Jimmy sucks....then what?" I'm not fretting, losing sleep or otherwise, simply responding to a question in a thread.

Trying to look from the outside-in, here's where I get a bit ticked about our QB situation:

Steelers currently have 4 QB's (granted, they are cut and signed daily)

Big Ben = Out, he doesn't count.

Dixon = Would Steelers straight up trade him for any QB on our Roster? No, because he is a prospect, and has demonstrated flashes of greatness.

Leftwich = Would Steelers straight up trade him for any QB on our Roster? No, because he is better than what we have to offer.

Batch = Would Steelers straight up trade him for any QB on our Roster? No, because he is better than what we have to offer.

My point being, we could have signed any of the last 2 guys on that list, and it would be an upgrade (arguably) over anything we carry right now. Finding top 10 QB talent is difficult beyond belief. Finding a QB to manage a game and do ball control offense should not be that hard.

If Clausen sucks, well he keeps playing anyway because we've got nothing behind him. Unless you think Fox is going to run the Mountaineer package all game.

But don't jump the gun on the Clausen sucks idea. Just remember the following.

- He played at a high-profile school, with more pressure than most college QBs experience

- Last year Clausen threw 28 TDs to 4 INTs. That sort of ratio is a positive indicator of NFL success

- Last year he threw for 3722 yards in 12 games, at a clip 8.78 yards per attempt

- He completed 68% of his passes. Yes, 68%. That's another strong indicator of NFL success.

- His QB rating was 161.43. Another indicator...

- He also left after his Junior year—he has a lot of physical development to go, and mental/emotional as well

- He's literally prepared for this moment his entire life, and by prepared I mean actual locker room, film room, on-the field preparation.

- He's a gym rat, and a film junkie. Both are indicators of NFL success.

I'm honestly not worried about his talent, ambition, drive, leadership, or ability. We've got the second generation of Robo-QB on our hands. What I'm worried about is him snapping. If he does, he's toast and we're back to square one as far as QB goes.

If he doesn't, I'm saying right now that in as few as three years we may have the best QB in the NFC South, and possibly the NFC on our hands. He has it in him to become that good.
