Zod fixes the Panthers in 3 simple steps....

Step 1: Stop giving up the big plays. Two weeks in a row now we have been killed by passes longer than 15 yards, mainly giving up big third downs. The front seven look good. Really good. The back 4 need to get their thumb out of their ass and get after it.

Step 2: Keep it simple for Jimmy Jam. Memo to Jeff Davidson: don't get cute. Let Jimmy be a game manager. Run the ball, then run the ball some more. Run it until the defensive tackles are halfway dying from lack of oxygen. Then when that happens, run it again. Sure, you may not score any points the first half, but the second half you will score plenty. You have a young team, its time to rope-a-dope the old ones.

Step 3: ???????

Step 4: Profit

Step 2a. Call more short/intermediate routes, especially early. Let Clausen get his confidence up before you ask him to heave it up for grabs downfield.

This is something Davidson has failed on Moore and prob will on Jimmy as well. That bootleg crap and fade routes dont build rhythm.

Thats why everyone talks about our QBs looking good in garbage time. Guess what being in the shotgun and having crossing patterns to work with dose wonders. Even Moore had his best drive with the shotgun formation cause of this.

Matt Moore is not responsible for the lack of a pass rush by our D. What happened since the preseason? They had something like 25 sacks in 4 PS games.

Our cornerbacks are horrid. HORRID. How did Gamble rate the contract he got last year? Munnerlin is just bad, period. I think he should be a safety at best. And NO ONE in our defensive backfield showed that they know how to tackle. Of course, they weren't alone, the D line showed as much on some crucial pass plays when they should have had Freeman sacked but didn't. The heart went out from the whole team it seemed on that long 3rd and 15 or so that led to their second TD.

We need to try a wrinkle on kick returns. Our coverage is OK, but our returns are not. Perhaps a reverese once in a while is worth trying. Pittsburg did it yeasterday, with great success.

Sounds like the playbook from Jake's first season. It also sounds like the type of play that most people bitch and complain about, but when it produces wins, shuts everybody the fug up. I'm all for it. We have a team built to do it. Now it's all about executing.

No argument. but we don't seem to have a pass rush at ANYTIME these days. They aren't worn out in the first quarter!

I don't really agree with that - they often have a rush, they just can't finish yet. I think as the season goes on, we'll see their production increase.

In response to the original post...

Step 1: I agree the big plays need to stop. The front 4 are playing the run better than the pass, but the DBs are a nightmare (largely due to no pressure on the QB & the zone coverage). I like the effort Godfrey gives, but it was a mistake to let Harris go...it is the mental game Godfrey needs work on.

Step 2: It will not matter what they do with Clausen if they do not establish an effective passing game early...early...in the game. Noone respects our passing game & for good reason. The screens are working (when a QB can hit the route...which Moore was unable to do very well) & we need to continue that, but we have to be able to establish a passing game BeFoRe the run...b/c we have been figured out (not hard to do!). Once a true threat with passing is established, it will give more room to run, then we can mix a real game plan back in (if Davidson knows how to do that). How sad is this offense!? We have awesome running backs who are making more out of nothing than most could do, but they have to have at least a minimal threat with the air game.

Defense will always suck when they are on the field right away b/c of offense going 3 & out consistently.

Man, I really did think we could have a decent season this year, but Fox being apathetic (may sound unfair, but appears to be accurate) & Davidson having no clue will not get us wins. This is not due to players not caring (yet). Defensive issues are due to lack of pass rush & weak DB coverages (esp. Marshall & Godfrey). Marshall has been a nightmare.

What team have you been watching? The Panthers never had a great pass rush early in the season. Pepp never even started to play until around week 6.

What are we arguing about again? I didn't say we usually have a great pass rush early in the season. My point, and maybe I'm in the minority, was that the loss of Peppers has put us in a position where we need to blitz to pressure the QB. I'm not saying we didn't generate pressure against NYG and TB, but we certainly didn't generate enough pressure in either game to make our tampa-2 effective. My answer would be to blitz.

Front 7 looks good? Dline = zero sacks through 2 games...

If they would quit trying to arm Tackle giant QBs then maybe they could get one. They could have laid the wood on Freeman a couple of times but instead of going for it, they hesitated and Freeman made a move to break through the crappy ass arm tackle.. MULTIPLE TIMES. Seeing Everette Brown jump on top of Sanchez like he's a bitch is what I was promised from our D-line. I need to see more of that. poo, if we're going to give up the big play, at least use the hitstick and make them pay. Eventually, they'll make a mistake.
