I hope you guys don't get too attached to Clausen this season

Hurney drafted him and I am sure when Hurney hires a new coach he will tell him Clausen is the guy.

I really hope this is the case.

If we do a complete FO clean out then this whole roster purge and good recent drafting goes down the pan as the new FO will want to start from scratch.

Also I feel Hurney actually is pretty good at what he does.

Wait are you serious? Jim Zorn, Danny Crossman....and Terrel Pryor with a top five pick????first you claim Smitty's career is over then you pull this poo out of your ass. Get a glass of warm milk and tucker down for the night sam mills fan. It will all be better in the morning.

Unless he plays lights out, there's a very decent chance that our new head coach post-Fox (Jim Zorn? Danny Crossman?) isn't going to like him. Remember that new coaching staffs like to bring in their own guy, especially at quarterback, unless the guy already there is great.

So I think it's entirely possible that we'll end up drafting Andrew Luck/Ryan Mallett/Terrelle Pryor with our top 5 pick next season.

Wanna bet?

Not necessarily. First of all why would you scratch an elite QB if Jimmy turns out to be one in his second year?

Why would you scratch any rookies in their second year? That's when they have gotten rid of most of their mistakes and they can begin how to play real football. Works out perfect. Not so new that they are still full of rookie juice, but new enough that no ingrained coaching philosophies have really settled in.

I'm sure the new coaching staff will find room for most of them. The question is, are any of them going to be worth keeping? They have to show something this year.

Because with new HC's & OC's comes new philosophies, new playbooks and new players who fit each of those.

Quite often you see new FOs coming in and they want to draft 'their guys' or 'their kind of player'. They have ZERO attachment to existing players, and ZERO reason to stick with them. In fact as Clausens contract is pretty cheap considering, they have even less incentive to give him a chance.

Now I know they are not an elite players, but I felt pretty sorry for players like Brady Quinn and Jason Campbell. One was constantly on the trading block as each new head coach tried to replace him, the other simply was given half a season to prove himself and was promptly traded away. Another example is with Miami when Cam Cameron was canned.

It's very likely Clausen looks like a rookie this season, so there will be no statistical reason to think he is destined for a great future, so why WOULD a new FO have any faith in him? They will have not coached him and thus anyone they bring in while be on the same footing as he is.

Hopefully if Hurney DOES stay, then he will have more pull over the guys who are already here.

Clausen won't get canned immediately, but that doesn't mean he'll be the guaranteed starter.

It'd be different if he was an old veteran who a coach couldn't mold into their QB or something, but this guy will be going into his 2nd year. Barring a terrible showing this year, most coaches wouldn't want to toss him out just because they didn't draft him. Clausen has the skillset to play at this level, so we'll see. I expect him to get at least a year of gracep eriod before he's discarded :P

the next head coach will buy into the current way things are done(simply cause that's the way JR wants it) Hurney is going to hire someone with a similar background as fox, just hope he wants somebody who's willing to adapt to our talent & be a little more agressive on both sides of the ball ala belichick

I'm trying, but I just can't think of a single incident of a coach coming in after a potential franchise QB's rookie year and kicking him to the curb. There have been incidents like Jay Cutler, but he was established and whined his way out of Denver. When has a new coach come in and done what SMF says will happen?

And for the clueless, Hurney is going nowhere unless he wants to. Assuming Fox is gone (and I think most people do), Hurney will hire his successor, just like he hired Fox.
