Why do we keep signing/drafting undersized LBs at safety and then act baffled when they suck in coverage?

Mike Minter has a chokehold on the franchise from beyond the grave, we still think run support safeties are the happenin' thing even as modern WRs blow by them

I was looking for Blackmon's injury history and couldn't find thorough details. Looks like he had shoulder surgery in the offseason. Ankle and knee seem to be what kept him out of games. Says he started 16 games in 24 with 100% snaps on D, 15 games in 23 with 95% D snaps and 14 games in 23 with 75% sanps.

Good player when on the field but it looks like the Colts were not willing to bet on him again this year. Making him play 100% of the snaps while injured last year and then not brining him back is wild. I wonder what he is asking for in pay.

Its just absolutely baffling. I have longed for a legit sideline to sideline over the top true FS for decades and we keep rolling out safeties that play like they need to be wearing a fuging neck roll.

So you think two safeties visiting at once is a negotiation tactic? “Here is an offer, but don’t forget we’re also looking at this other dude so you better take it.”

I had that thought.  I also had the thought, "We will sign the wrong one."

I was even proposing trying Farley at S if CB is not his thing.  We have no pass rush (at the moment) and no deep S.  What could possibly go wrong?

Free agent S Julian Blackmon will visit the Panthers on Monday.
Blackmon, a former third-round pick, has been a five-year starter for the Colts. Last season, he started in all 16 games he appeared in, notching three interceptions and four pass breakups while also totaling 86 tackles. He’s appeared in 31 of a possible 34 regular season games over the last two seasons and will be 27 at the start of next season. The Panthers continue to look for ways to improve a defense that ranked 32nd in points allowed and touchdown passes allowed. Blackmon earned a PFF coverage grade of 73.5 last season and would give them a solid starter on the back end if the two sides can agree to a deal.

Free agent S Marcus Williams is visiting the Panthers on Monday.
He’ll join Julian Blackmon on the safety tryout circuit in Carolina. Williams was released by the Ravens in a move that had been expected for months. This is the first known outside interest we’ve seen for him. Entering his age-29 season, the safety has a long track record of NFL success but posted a dreadful 37.3 PFF coverage grade in 601 defensive snaps last year before the Ravens moved him out of the lineup in Week 11.

    • This is why you have to be careful, just everyone. Green needs to be careful of who he surrounds himself with.  All it takes is even the hint of suspicion to open up an investigation against him.  I'm not saying all NFL players need to be choir boys who got to bed by 9PM with a glass of milk, but he needs to have a strong support network that is watching out for him.  That doesn't mean covering things up for him, but guiding him to better decision making for the future. An NFL team that wants to drop a major investment into the young man also has to do it's research.  I'd talk to every ex GF he's had.  I'd bring a behavioral psychologist as well to see how they react and read body language.  Lots of guys can clean up their image in short order, but if there's an underlying issue, there are signs even that can't hide. His talent is undeniable.  Dude could be an excellent edge defender for many teams in the NFL.  But if he goes to jail, it's hard to play.  If he becomes a pariah, it's hard to pay him.  Look, billionaires aren't clean people, they are just rich enough to keep their secrets safe.  Any team considering drafting Mike Green is going to have to do a LOT of research and investigation into someone with that kind of background, innocent or guilty.   After all, you don't want to invest a high pick in Green, only to lose him and the value to the team.
