Carolina Panthers want to return to their strength: Run, run, run

but that's just it. they weren't stopping it. fans are so spoiled by seeing big plays in the run game that if the backs get 2, 3, or 4 yards a touch then they see it as not working. look at carolina's rushing attack before double trouble. the panthers were blessed if they had a back that averaged 4 ypc. the run game was always based on volume. keep pounding until something happens.

only 2-3x was williams or stewart stopped for a loss or no gain last sunday.

the giants never really sold out to stop the run seeing as how smith saw double and triple covereage throughout the game.

Actually, they were stopping it. Williams had one long run, other than that there were a bunch of 1, 2, and 3 yard runs. And we only went away from the run once the Giants got a significant lead. In the first half, we had approximately 18 runs, and 13 passes, and that includes the last drive were we had to pass on all downs since the clock was running out. Before that last drive it was 18 runs to 9 passes. That is hardly going away from the run.

There are variables that affect our abilitiy to run the ball..ie penalties that leave you 3rd and long, defensive schemes, being 2 TDs behind etc.....I agree we want to run the ball but there are many variables that figure in.I would like us to be able use Mike Goodson for screens and check down routes and our TEs to hold the lbs and safteys so we can run.Goodson was outrunning the blocking on screens last week.

The 2nd half is exactly when you do not abandon the running game unless you are so far behind that you have no choice (which we were not) and even then, our running game is so explosive it has the potential to close a significant points deficit.

The payoff for all the pounding and griding you do in the first half with the run game comes in the 2nd half, when the defense starts to get worn down. I thought the Panthers understood this better than any other team in the NFL...

Yep, like last week down 14 late and we had a 1st and goal at the Giant 4 yard line. Time to go to your strength and let Dwill/Stewart put it in the endzone. Davidson goes pass, pass, pass and we end up with another redzone turnover. Instead of a 7 point game it's game over.

Again, I'll believe the commitment to the run game from Davidson when I see it.

Well, today when we had it on the goal line with Clausen, we went run run run, and that didn't work out to well either. Is there something besides running or passing we can try? :)

The playcalling of run run pass, run run pass is not a successful one. Williams and Stewart were gashing the Bucs early but they got behind and panicked again. Why does Goodson play so much now? I'm not saying he hasn't looked good but with Williams and Stewart on the team I think he should take a back seat on the running.

you guys are proving my point...

remember the infamous 2006 atlanta game where williams and foster rushed for 184 yards and weinke only attempted 7 passes?

atlanta couldn't stop the run...

...BUT they played it very well.

foster had 28 attempts and averaged 3.3 ypc. his longest run was 11 yards.

williams had 21 attempts and averaged 3.9 ypc. his longest run was 10 yards.

Atlanta was stopping it. We won 10-3. Our offence/running game was doing nothing.

The situation was totally different, we were dealing with a team who was actually scoring. And were were down by mutiple scores.

I disagree. If the other team is selling out to stop the run, and they are stopping the run, then you have to pass it. If you can't pass it when they are selling out to stop the run, then you can't win.

that is the same as basic math.. 1 + 1 = 2.. I don't understand why people, especially our coaching staff can't figure this out..

you need more than 1 receiver.. having a great running game is a waste when you get 8 or 9 in the box... make a play for another WR and you can open poo up..

it's f**king common sense...

get back to the run? how about we focus on the passing game in the off-season, and then we don't need to rely ONLY on a running game..

and what else are they going to say? Fox's main fix is to run.. it's his only "go to play"...

------------

and they didn't get away from the run until they HAD to start throwing... this is such a POS deterrent..

You're inside the 5, and you run it up the middle 3 times? WTF..

"Realistically, it's still the approach of we'd like to play the game balanced. But if I was going to lean one way or another, I'd still rather lean on the run game."

realistically, you have no other option...

The sad part is that we did focus on the passing game in the off season and we still suck.

Not in the WR arena... half measures avail nothing.. 2 late round draft picks aren't focusing on the offense.. the only thing we did was get lucky on the Clausen pick.. (I hope so anyhow) You still need receivers to throw the ball to..

Problem is two of those runs were by Goodson. I'm sorry but when Stewart is only getting 1 more touch than Goodson then there's a problem.
