Carolina Panthers want to return to their strength: Run, run, run

wow.

this article sums up a discussion i've been meaning to start on the huddle...the panthers should NEVER abandon the run...EVER. with an oline that's built to run and 2 of the best backs in the league in the backfield, something's going to give sooner or later. it may be ugly, but it will be effective. i've said it in the past, the panthers should be rushing the ball 30-40 times EVERY game.

the team only needs a decent/somewhat good passing attack, lead by a qb with a big arm and who limits his mistakes.

for what it's worth, as bad as carolina's rushing attack look last sunday, new york's was non existent. COMPLETELY shut down in the first half. bradshaw and jacobs both averaged less than a yard per carry going into the third quarter.

they never abandoned it.

I disagree. If the other team is selling out to stop the run, and they are stopping the run, then you have to pass it. If you can't pass it when they are selling out to stop the run, then you can't win.

but that's just it. they weren't stopping it. fans are so spoiled by seeing big plays in the run game that if the backs get 2, 3, or 4 yards a touch then they see it as not working. look at carolina's rushing attack before double trouble. the panthers were blessed if they had a back that averaged 4 ypc. the run game was always based on volume. keep pounding until something happens.

only 2-3x was williams or stewart stopped for a loss or no gain last sunday.

the giants never really sold out to stop the run seeing as how smith saw double and triple covereage throughout the game.

[iNSERT OPPONENT'S DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR'S NAME]'s gameplan session

DC: Well, guys, this week our opponent is the panthers. their offense is equipped with a beefy Oline, two of the best running backs in the game, a so-so quarterback and one good receiver. They have no reliable TE, and they have no other weapons in the passing game other than Smith. Gee, I wonder what the f**k they are going to try to do early...

We had a 3.5 ypc, and thats including the one 29 yarder. The longest runs after that was one 9 and one 5 yarder.

They were stopping it.

There was more to them stopping it than "they were playing it well".

I want to see more pro-I. Two receivers. Not 3 because we don't have a dangerous enough pass game (receivers) for that to fool anybody. Don't overload with 2 TEs to one side. Its a dead giveaway. Just pro-I, power, iso, counter, zone stretch. That is where our run game starts. THEN you branch into the overload, the big sets, hell, even the slot stuff to set up play action. Don't come out with 3 WRs on the first play like we did against the Giants.

basically the blueprint for stopping the panthers offense is run blitz, clog all the lanes, and force the offense into obvious passing situations, relying on Matt Moore to try to make Peyton Manning plays when he obviously isn't up to that level yet, and never will be unless he can get a down to throw when they haven't dropped most of the back 7 into pass coverage

you guys are proving my point...

fans are so spoiled by seeing big plays in the run game that if the backs get 2, 3, or 4 yards a touch then they see it as not working.

remember the infamous 2006 atlanta game where williams and foster rushed for 184 yards and weinke only attempted 7 passes?

atlanta couldn't stop the run...

...BUT they played it very well.

foster had 28 attempts and averaged 3.3 ypc. his longest run was 11 yards.

williams had 21 attempts and averaged 3.9 ypc. his longest run was 10 yards.

The 2nd half is exactly when you do not abandon the running game unless you are so far behind that you have no choice (which we were not) and even then, our running game is so explosive it has the potential to close a significant points deficit.

The payoff for all the pounding and griding you do in the first half with the run game comes in the 2nd half, when the defense starts to get worn down. I thought the Panthers understood this better than any other team in the NFL...

You still have to pass the ball on first down from time to time to keep the D honest. Until Davidson starts doing that, the other team will shut the run down just enough for Davidson to panic and pass all the time and then it's all over. The D will just Tee off on Moore, and no matter how close the game is, nothing will work and that is the game. Just like last week. And every other game Davidson abandons our strength.

    • Fair enough. I never once said not supporting Tepper makes you a bad fan by the way. I can't stand the guy myself. You on the other hand don't like anything about the team. You can't stand the owner or the coach because his religion doesn't fall in line with how you feel it should so I'm curious why you are even a fan at this point? Hell, you like nothing about the team, why even be a fan these days?  We can go backs and forth about how many games we have been to and measure dicks if you want or but it doesn't matter. I've been to my fair share over the years. Some as a fan and some work related but I bet you have been to more due to my weekends being filled with some work I do at the collegiate level so I probably only average maybe 2-3 games per year tops. You have me beat there im sure. You are probably very correct on us not being the same in anything at all I am quite sure of that. If I'm a "mark" (as you put it) for not liking Tepper and not caring about Canales religion or his political beliefs or letting it have weight on whether or not I like the team then call me a "mark" but you're still a whiny bitch either way.  When you hate everything about leadership from their personalities to their religious beliefs all the way to who they vote for at that point why even be a fan? I can side with you judging by your beliefs that you have made apparent, if you owned and coached the team, I sure as hell would find a new one to support but as you said we are different. Enjoy Norway, it is a beautiful country. Visited last year myself and absolutely loved it.
    • The playing well part, depends on what happens going forward. It could have been a tease that will dig our hole deeper.  In the small picture of one game, probably his best game. Green Bay wasn't as great as people think it was. More like one good quarter. Followed by two games of exactly nothing.
    • Oh, it was handled horrifically.  Ego got in the way of a plan.  I'm just saying, that he actually probably stumbled into the better outcome/plan.
