wow... for a while it looked like Pittsburgh was trying to set the record for most black qb's on a team. I think they tied the previously established mark of 3 originally set by Jacksonville when they had Leftwich, Gerard, and Quinn.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released quarterback Byron Leftwich so they can dress an additional defensive lineman for Sunday's game at Tennessee.

Leftwich is expected to return to the 53-man roster on Monday. He already is guaranteed his full salary this season.

Leftwich, mending from a left knee injury, was not expected to play against Tennessee. The Steelers will go with Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch at quarterback, as they did in their opener, a 15-9 overtime win over Atlanta.

With nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) injured, the Steelers were down to two backup defensive lineman. Leftwich's roster spot will be taken by Steve McLendon, a first-year player from Troy State.

I was surprised by this... I guess they're happy with Dixon and Batch until Ben gets back... that or Leftwich is too old and hurt to help them much now.

I know Pittsburgh has a glut of Olinemen, I wonder if they realize that a center/tackle runblocking is almost the same as a NT/DT rushing.

Byron was still hurt. He was only released to make room for a lineman this week. He will be back with the team next week. Like I said though, he is still banged up himself and likely wouldn't have played today either way.
