Why 2010 Means Nothing to the Carolina Panthers (no smack)

When you're recovering from the retirement home that used to be One Buc Place, you're going to take some lumps. Tampa flushed out all the bullcrap remaining from the Gruden/Allen era and left only the parts that worked. The only thing remaining that is questionable is Sabby Piscatelli, and he's not even a starter and is back on special teams.

The deal is with your franchise, is you NEED to rebuild around that running game. You need a front office sweep. Name one thing Carolina has ever done dominately enough to win a Super Bowl? Nothing. John Fox has been blowing the whistle on the mediocrity train there for far too long. Tampa did the exact same thing as Carolina since winning the Super Bowl. But the difference is, we discovered it and took care of it and are starting brand new but in a similar mold.

This Sunday shouldn't matter whatsoever to you. Because the sad fact that is burning in the back of your mind is you won't do anything this year. Or next year. Or the year after that. Because you'll still be sitting at a traffic light with Fox driving the car while other teams are driving right past you.

The prime years of DeAngelo and Stewart (the only two players you have to look forward to) are going to be wasted while you're sitting there doing nothing.

With a new regime comes new change. Carolina's regime doesn't work at all. But they're still there, while precious minutes on a short shelf life position drip away like wax on a candle.

The way you should see it, is that Tampa is AT LEAST two years ahead of you. You'll be scratching your head at who is coming in next to lead your little pity party in Carolina next year. Then they'll purge the roster AGAIN after you lost a lot of veteran experience this very year.

All the while you're doing that we'll be adding the handful of pieces we need to make this team a complete foundation, while your guys are dropping magnets off the white board the 2010 Panthers depth chart was on.

Matt Moore is the future huh? What about Clausen? No? Maybe? Well while you're finding that out in 2011, our guy will be in his third year. With our bright shiny receivers you wish you had and a brand new runningback acquired from the April Event, extra O-Line reinforcement, and pass rush.

Whatever era you had is done. Enjoy the scrap heap for a while. Have fun sitting in pit row, while everyone else is on the track.

You're fooling yourself.

You realize you're just as guilty as Tampa is of mediocrity? Why do you think the NFC South historically has had such a change of power? Mediocrity by all the teams involved. No one stood out.

Atlanta figured this out. New Orleans figured this out. Tampa has figured it out. What's Carolina's excuse?

"Yeah, let's go ahead and stick with the coach that's causing us to spin our wheels. We got really close to doing something one of those years."

No.

You got knocked out by a 9-7 Arizona team in 2009. That's it. Do you really think you had a shot against Pittsburgh that year? Not a chance in hell. The NFC was notoriously weak that year, but if that's what you want to put your hat on go ahead. I'm sure Jake Delhomme was going to lead you to the promised land! Darn i missed that one...

Deny, Deny, Deny... that's the first sign you got a problem...

See, this is what I'm talking about. I present a big argument that requires ACTUAL THOUGHT and all i get are "well we're still winning games" and little pithy comments about The Observer.

Ball up, and actually make yourselves look intelligent for a change.

Or is there going to be nothing but, "I am rubber, you are glue" or "I know you are but what am I", replies to this?

Nope we got rid of our main problem in the offseason (Jake). We will be winning most of our games for the next 5 years.

And replaced him with a guy that went 14 of 33 and threw 3 picks on his route to a concussion?

I guess Jake was licking windows his entire career in Carolina, he must've been terrible.

      Sure there's a ton of transplants in Colorado now. But as far as Denver in particular goes the Broncos have also been around for 65 years. Someone moving to Denver is going to be far more likely to become a fan of the Broncos and even attend games versus someone moving to Charlotte and the Panthers. Like I said it's not just one single thing with us it's multiple factors.

      He's definitely getting better. It's fun to watch.  I've been getting killed for this take, but with the current state of college football, it just takes more time to develop a quarterback. I don't think it's a plug and play position anymore. I'm really not sure if it ever was. NFL offenses have always been substantially more complex than the college game, and the college game has simplified even more in recent years. Many college teams do not have a physical playbook anymore. That's just not the national football league.  Are there freaks who have success from day 1? Yes, without question. But so many of those guys are runners, and so many of those guys tail off. Is Bryce ever going to be Josh Allen? Probably not.  What I am seeing is a guy with complete command of the offense. He's checking into things at the line, making adjustments, and making timely throws.  He goes to David Moore a ton, because Moore is a consistent route runner. Bryce knows where he is and when he should be open. I think the guy with the "super processor" needs to be comfortable in the offense in order to do the "super processing." He doesn't have elite arm talent, and he is small of stature, but if he makes the smart play consistently, and he's willing to throw the ball downfield and not make mistakes, like he's starting to show, he's going to be a starter for a long time in this league, and it's not a position I'd spend draft capital right now.
