If Fox does not adjust his staff this offseason....

Does that mean he is going with a sink / stay afloat strategy for next year? It appears that the guy is stubborn as hell about changing anything but I am certain he has to feel his job is on the line if this team struggles next year.... Coaches are not indispensible, Shanahan got fired who was a legend in Denver for his stubborn and controlling ways.

I'm starting to get that feeling, that Fox will sink or swim with the staff he has barring any potential departures for other opportunities (Lewis). It's interesting you brought up Shanahan; he was fired in Denver partly b/c of his refusal to change his defensive personnel and strategy. I'm not sure if JR will give Fox the same ultimatum, but if the team struggles next year, I wouldn't be suprised if there are major changes, including the head coach IMO.

I think that Richardson will just outright fire Fox if we aren't consistent next year (meaning another playoff trip). He said at the beginning of this year that it was playoffs or bust. Next year I assume that he will give him the same message. JR and the family don't seem like they are content with making the playoffs every other year especially since there really isn't a reason that we shouldn't with the players we have.

Think about this...

If we re-sign Gross we could have the best OL in football

We will have probably one of the top 3 RBs in football (IMO the best tandem)

The best WR in football

The best MLB in football (one of the best overall LB corps)

A top 5 CB

Coaching and QB play (two pretty big ingredients) were the only thing holding us back in the playoffs this year if it happens again I don't think Fox is gonna have much of an argument. Remember that Schottenheimer got canned last year after a 14-2 record...

Fox accomplished just what he told JR he would do... establish a power running game (like Pittsburgh). At this point, I don't think he's on the hot seat with JR at all... even after one big bust of a playoff game like we had.

JR doesn't think like most fans on here do... and he certainly doesn't have the knee-jerk reaction most of us have. Anything can happen next season (and any number of valid excuses that Fox might come up with), so I think it's too early to say what will happen to Fox after next season, even if we go 7-9.

JR and family does realize that the Panthers defense has become stale and predictable. They are just waiting to see if Coach Fox has figured that out too. If Fox doesn't show some leadership and upgrade his coaching staff then look for the JR to find a head coach in 2010 who is more situationally aware.

If we keep our D just like it is and change notting we will prob lose about 4 more games next year. I doubt that will cut it cause when you get in the Playoffs and win games your ok but when you dont and lose in such an ugly way you tend to make moves to be more competitive. With that said I would not surprise me if Trgo kept his job.

How long after the season ended did it take for Fox to get rid of Henning? It took being 32nd in the NFL on 3rd down. The hesitation with Trgo might be that it would an indictment on Fox, being the defensive guru and all. Two points:

1. Fox seems to hang on to people for one year longer than he should(Henning, Morgan, Foster).

2. The Dan Morgan situation hid Trgovacs faults for 2 or 3 years. Everyone thought that the deficiencies in the defense were because Dan Morgan was being paid big bucks to sit on the bench. When Morgan is cut, the truth is apparent. Trgo is not good enough to get the job done(job done=Super Bowl, not 12 wins).

Well, the 12 wins were more of a credit to the offense than the defense. Our defense gave up over 20 points to cause us to lose more than 12 games this past season. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Trgo has been a problem all along. Now, whether Fox sits on him another year... or even holds onto him until he himself gets fired, that's a whole 'nother matter.

I think it is a sink or swim season. Nothing is going to change this off season as far as Coaching is concerned. So they will probally buy another season by having a great defense next year, and then get blown out in the playoffs again. Because according to everyone here that loves Jake and Fox, they have done too much for this Franchise to get fired. So get used to more of the same.

I'm going to be pissed if the coverage issues and QB play aren't addressed in some manner this offseason. I can just see the next step after "bad day to have a bad game" being "just keep doing what you were doing, that playoff loss was an aberration". It wasn't. Our long standing defensive faults were exposed by an Arizona OC who drew up a play on the plane ride into CLT (insert obligatory cursing here). Jake's "bad" cycles are getting worse. Address them, or fire him, don't really care which. Same goes for Fox/Trgo/Lewis/McCoy. Fix it, or don't let the door hit ya.

*as close as i'm going to come to a one-time vent after the playoff loss*
