in fairness, att has a sh*tload of useless bloatware on the captivate. I'll definitely be rooting this once 2.2 comes out.

Keep an eye out on xda-developers.com forums, specifically the Captivate Development forum. I'm sure you probably are aware of it, but wanted you to be aware of it if not. There are one-click root tools available and ROMs as well. I think there's an early release of a Froyo ROM but it looks to be plagued by several bugs.

I've got a rooted Incredible that I absolutely adore, and it flies with overclocked kernel and Ruby ROM.

Also this screen looks amazing.

The screen is great on the galaxy S phones. You're right there is hardly any difference between the captivate, vibrant, epic, and fascinate. I'm sure you've also noticed how light it is compared to every other comparable phone. The best thing about these and what I think sets them apart is if you hold the screen in direct sunlight it is just as clear and glare-free.
