The Secondary- Why Lucas and Gamble are not to blame!

It is obvious that many people on this board are very disapointed with the play of the secondary this year specifically Gamble and Lucas. I really dont understand why other then maybe most people dont understand how football works from a player/coaches perspective. Dont get me wrong, Gamble and Lucas have been burnt badly a few times this season. Godfrey has been part of the problem occasionaly with missed coverages putting the blame on Lucas mostly. However the problem is not Gamble nor Lucas. Both are phenominal athletes and have been a huge part of both the good and the mediocre defenses of the past few years. The problem lies in the coaching. Im not pointing out anything new as we all are hoping for a Turgovac fireing in the upcoming weeks, but both him and John Fox have put together pathetic game plans and play calls week in and out. The biggest example of this is the complete meltdown game in the playoffs. The first half, fitzgerald seemed untouchable. He absolutly shreded the defense. The problem was that Turg was having the D play with a 2 deep zone. No one manned up on Fitzgerald, allowing him to find the open spots on the field. You cannot allow an elite reciever to play against a consistent, predictable zone defense. We all know how incredible Steve Smith is especially at finding open spots on the field. I would have loved to see Smith play against the defensive scheme we had the first half. He would have made Fitzgerald look like Keary Colbert.

The second half was a whole different story. Fitzgerald was virtually invisible and the Arizona offense was slowed significantly. The coaches finally realized that they needed blitz warner and man up on Fitzgerald.

My point is this. Lucas and Gamble are two elite corners in the NFL. However they have fallen victim to horrible play calling therefore looking like scrubs. I am really hoping to see both of them lined up next year. Those two along with Marshall, Harris, and Godfrey are a force to be reconed with when playing in the right system. The Turd being replaced along with a good secondary coach coming in will really allow this secondary to play to their full potential and terrorize the rest of the NFL.

The truth has been spoken! Flame away!

I agree with many of your points, Gambe is a stud and Godfrey was outstanding for a rookie

Godfrey was great and I am looking forward to a good year for him next season.

As for Gamble, the dude needs to work with the WR's and learn how to catch the ball more often. :D
