Is quarterback Jimmy Clausen ready to lead Carolina Panthers?

It is only one game for sure and much too early to panic. But based on the one game (it is only one game) we don't have much to support Moore or Clausen. Pittsburgh and Baltimore both had good defenses, and last week we did not. We have two good running backs but outside of the one Williams run, we averaged 2 yards a run and couldn't run when we wanted to which was second and third and short. The line didn't get it done.

Honestly unless the defense and offensive line pick things up substantially, it won't matter who we have at quarterback.

the d and oline need to improve not doubt, but i feel that they will improve & my question is will our qb play improve. we can talk lack of weapons and such but moore missed alot of checkdowns to our rb's on a couple of plays that he wasn't running for cover, since we only have one true weapon in the passing game, more passes to the rb's might keep some drives alive & opens things up down field

Best recent examples of rookie QB's doing well immediately:

-Joe Flacco (11-5 '08 Ravens - AFC Championship)

-Mark Sanchez (9-7 '09 Jets - AFC Championship)

-Matt Ryan (11-5 '08 Falcons - NFC Wildcard)

-Ben Roethlisberger (15-1 - AFC Championship)

These QB's share something in common -

They were all teams that were in the playoffs 2-3 years they were drafted. (CHECK).

All had top ranked running games backing them up. (CHECK)

They all were 1st round draft picks. (not check) Please name me a 2nd round QB that did well immediately.

The list of failures far exceeds the list of successes, however. I would stick with Matt Moore for two more games. Three strikes, you're out.

If the FO thinks Clausen is indeed the future (key word: if), then he needs to start at some point this year unless Moore is simply tearing it up. Normally this is not the case. Normally we'd let Jimmy sit a year while Moore plays out his one year deal. Then in 2011, Jimmy can struggle some and learn the game on the field.

But we are at an odd time right now. As I said beore, there may not BE a 2011. So if we just go with Matt and he does average, we'll make Jimmy sit 15-16 games. Remember, this is under the scenario that they've picked him as the future. Then...he sits for an entire year (as do Armanti Edwards, Gettis, etc) and maybe sees his skills erode a tad. Then in 2012, he's back and has his "rookie year". So, you mean to tell me I have to wait til 2013 before I can finaly trust the QB spot? That's a long way away.

well, another thing to think about is we are almost certainly getting a new coach.

We don't know what he will want to do. They often don't like to work with the old coaches QBs...and opt to bring there own guy(s).

And I'm damn proud of it. Cheers to sloppy ass game that will probably come down to field goals.

The Bucs have one of the WORST run defenses in the NFL. I would be surprised if we have to throw the ball 10 times Sunday.

The last time that TB was relevant in any football conversation was MNF tow years ago. Remember ....we were both 9-2. Then, we commenced to bitch slap your team into oblivion. You have yet to recover from that ass kicking.

Feel good this week that you barely...barely...beat the lowly Cleveland Browns. It might actually be the last week you feel such joy this season.

With his 5 yards per attempt average in the preseason you might want to dial back the yards to about 145. He threw for the same 5 yards an attempt we ran for in the preseason.
who were his targets and who was blocking for him? he wasn't exactly given he same tools he would have as a starter.

unless you are a starter, preseason isn't really a great indicator of what you could do.

do i want clausen to start? it depends on how moore does the next few weeks. if he can't get the offense going before the bye then hand the keys over to clausen and see what he could do. at the very least, when it appears that the panthers are out of playoff contention he should be given a shot.

is he ready? was big ben, flacco, ryan, sanchez ready? they were ready enough and clausen is at the very least on par with those guys. i think the world has changed from when it wasn't a good idea to let a rookie start. what the team has to have is an ok defense, a pretty solid line, and a big time run game running the ball 35 or so times per game and passing a whole lot less. that provides a really safe environment for him to get in and go.

i want moore to have his legit shot, but i do believe that clausen would be just fine if he were to step in. if he was meant to be the starter he should be able to step in at any time and take over.
