Is quarterback Jimmy Clausen ready to lead Carolina Panthers?

(By Darin Gantt, [email protected]) Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen could only shrug when asked about the possibility of having to play this week, his second in the NFL.p/It's hardly an ideal situation - not knowing whether starter Matt Moore will be able to start because of his concussion - but for rookie quarterbacks in the NFL, ideal situations are few and far between.

Have u guys seen what rookie quarterbacks have done lately in the league... Flacco = playoffs... Ryan = playoffs .... Sanchez = playoffs.... is he ready? probably not.... but i rather have him out there than Matt Moore throwing lame duck passes and showing us his best Delhomme impression... oh and Jeff Davidson is the real problem but thats another thread altogether

This question...no. The other one...maybe.

As to that, when is the last time that a rookie quarterback who wasn't the starter in week one led their team to a winning record as the starter?

>>>>>>>"The Pittsburgh Steelers did not intend to play Ben Roethlisberger much in 2004. With veterans Tommy Maddox and Charlie Batch on hand, the first-rounder from Miami (Ohio) was expected to watch. But Batch was lost to knee problems in the preseason and Maddox blew his elbow in Week 2.

Roethlisberger, surrounded by a solid running game and defense, was able to win 13 straight games and lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl title."<<<<<<<

When Clausen is given the opportunity to start(and I'm not saying it's going to be this week) obviously Davidson and Fox are going to have to run the ball alot giving Jimmy something to lean on just like the Steelers gave Ben when he was called upon. If our defense can continue to gel and the OLine pulls their heads back out of their asses we could be faced with the exact same scenario the Steelers were faced with in 2004, which turned out to be a very good one, don't cha think?

Granted Clausen might not win 13 straight, but with good protection from the BIG UGLIES up front, a solid running game and a good defense we could theoretically at the very least challenge for a Wild Card spot going into the playoffs. At least he has shown that he can read a defense and audible at the line of scrimmage, he doesn't play scared after feeling a bit of pressure from the defense, and he moves around quite well in the pocket, things Moore doesn't seem to be too capable of doing anymore...<<< just sayin'

I believe Tommy Maddox was the Steelers quarterback when Big Ben came in and went 15-0 as a starter during the regular season.

Edit: Not only were my facts wrong, but Gixxer beat me to it. Well said Gixxer. At least I got Tommy Maddox right.

Our issue is that Moore and Clausen are both very young. You can't sit one while the other plays out his years here (ignore contracts). They are also about the same talent wise.

What IS the issue is that if we were to ever go to Clausen (ignore contracts), how else is he supposed to get experience by any other way than going out there and playing? Practice? God no. Pre-season? Hell no. The only way a rookie lets you know if he should start is to toss him out there. Peyton Manning was horrible his first season for example. The Bucs Freeman had a rough rookie season last year but the kid is already looking better.

This is NOT a Moore versus Clausen reply. It's just saying that a "he's not ready" line isn't valid. The only way to get ready is to go out and play in a real game. Clausen can't do that on a bench. Moore can't improve if we sit him because of a few bad games. We have to stick with one of these guys and just go with it. If Moore is the answer, sign him to a long term contract and see if anyone bites on Clausen. If we think Jimmy is the answer, put him out there the second Moore screws up horribly again and STAY with Jimmy no matter how awful he'll look. Or, use Matt for the year, let him walk, and struggle through a rookie Clausen season in 2012.

BTW, owners, that year off will do SUCH a wonder for our youngins. Thanks for the possible strike...asshats.

sometimes i feel like writers just organize a few huddle posts and call it a day.

I know, right? I mean, this is the ONLY Panthers board on the Internet, and writers are SO dumb and have NO clue about sports at all. The only way they can even imagine anything at all to do with the Panthers is to come here and steal ideas from the most intelligent football minds on the planet. They should all be ashamed! Ashamed!

how do you know Jimmy Clausen is not ready for the NFL when he hasnt played 1 NFL game from start to finish in the regular season. Everybody is speculating until you actually see results on the field.

he's a rookie? If you have little experience it's hard to be ready for something. I got a quick little 3 day stint today with a caterer and it took a lot of convincing because of how green I am in foodservice.
